Breast Reduction Surgery - Why People Do It

Malcolm Tatum
Breast reduction is often looked upon as nothing more than an elective surgery that alters the appearance of the man or woman who undergoes the procedure. While it is true that the patient's physical appearance is often an important consideration, there are a number of other reasons why people choose to have a portion of breast tissue removed. Here are some of the reasons why reduction surgery may be the right choice for you.

Back Pain

Women who have large breasts often notice that they experience back pain from time to time. The pain may be concentrated in the upper area around the shoulders, or further down the spinal column, such as near the small of the back. Over time, the reaction to the pain may cause women to begin slumping over slightly, in an unconscious effort to ease the pain. Undergoing reduction surgery relieves stress on the back muscles, and prevent permanently altering the posture, two benefits that most people find highly desirable.

Lack of Self-Confidence

Breasts that tend to draw attention away from the rest of the person can often lead to an absence of self-worth. Women who think that others are interested in them only because of their endowments may forget they have other attributes that are equally appealing. As a result, they do not cultivate those other assets, and are more likely to feel awkward in social settings.

Men with gynecomastia, or enlarged breasts, may feel less masculine, and retreat from involvement in any activity that involves removing the shirt. This lack of confidence leads to avoiding beaches, swimming pools, or even working out a local gym, since the enlarged breasts may be exposed in the locker room or the shower.

Women and men who undergo a breast reduction often experience an increase in self-confidence as soon as the recuperative period is complete. Since they see their new physical appearance as being more like other people, they begin to feel more comfortable around others and are much more likely to socialize and participate in activities they once avoided.

Trouble Buying Clothes

While most people do not undergo breast reduction because of trouble finding the right clothing, the fact is that people who are uncomfortable with the size of their breasts tend to search for clothes that seem to provide some amount of camouflage for the chest area. Only after the surgery is complete and the time comes to buy some new clothes do they realize how much easier it is to find clothing that fits. This unanticipated benefit often reinforces the satisfaction with the decision to have the surgery, eliminating any lingering doubts about whether the decision was a good one or a bad one.

Before making a decision to undergo breast reduction, talk with your physician about your reasons for wanting the surgery. This will help you to set reasonable expectations for the outcome, and have a better idea of what the procedure can and can't accomplish. Once you know the benefits as well as any risk factors that may be relevant to your situation, it is possible to make the decision that is right for you, and be happy about that decision.
