Breastfeeding and Colic

Colic has been an issue since the dawn of ages. But not until recently did we name it and recognize it as a condition, instead of random crankiness.

Colic is still not fully understood, and we actually know very little about it. What we do know is that, for unknown reasons, it develops within the first 6 months of a baby's life. It causes discomfort for the baby and as a result the baby will cry frequently, and sometimes uncontrollably.

Although we know very little about the cause, there are quite a few theories as to the provocation of colic. One such theory that is being studied is the relationship that something is being passed through the mother's breast milk.

Breast milk provides the baby with sustenance and nutrients, but it could also contain variants depending on whether the mother is on any medications, supplements, or has an undetected health issue or imbalance. Everything that the mother takes in is passed to the baby and should be monitored closely as to prevent from causing the baby any discomfort or health problems.

Another possibility is that the baby may take in too much air while breastfeeding and this will cause gastrointestinal discomfort and pain. Unlike bottle nipples, a baby can not form a tight seal around the breast nipple, so taking in too much air while feeding is very likely.

Although neither theory is proven to cause colic, the mother can take precautions just in case. Taking concern as to what foods she eats is helpful and advised. Also she could look into using breast pumps to pump the milk into a bottle with a nipple that is designed for the baby's mouth. As well, the baby should be burped frequently during and after feedings to ensure that all excess air is expelled out of the baby's stomach and intestines.

The mother should drink plenty of water and take any natal vitamins provided by her health care professional. Unless otherwise advised, the mother should stay away from any over the counter medicines and supplements.

Avoiding stimulants such as caffeine and cigarettes are another extremely helpful suggestion if you are planning on breastfeeding, because these stimulants are many times stronger in the baby's system.

Be aware that even stress can have effects on your baby through the mother's breast milk. Stress causes your body to release chemicals and hormones that can be passed to your baby through breastfeeding.

There are numerous possibilities of the causes of colic, so do not stop here, research on the topic as much as you can. We do not know what causes colic, so to help eliminate possibilities, monitor everything that you take in, as well as your mood, and any outside toxins such as second hand cigarette smoke, chlorine in swimming pools, and so much more.

There is nothing more important and precious that your baby, so give concern to everything. Taking care of yourself is taking care of your baby.
