Breastfeeding... Sexually Explicit, Pornographic, and Obscene???

What is Wrong with Society!

Jeanne Marie Kerns
Breastfeeding has once again been a main topic in the news. Unfortunately it is not a news piece that discusses how natural and amazing it is for a baby, but instead it has been thought of as sexually explicit, pornographic, and obscene.

Before I write any further, I want to make it perfectly clear as to what these three specific words mean.

Sexually Explicit

Presents sexual content without obscuring or censoring it. The term is often used as a euphemism for pornography. It includes images and descriptions of nudity, especially genitalia, and unstimulated sex acts.

Pornographic

Pornography or porn is the explicit depiction of sexual subject matter with the sole intention of sexually exciting the viewer. It is to a certain extent similar to erotica, which is the use of sexually arousing imagery.

Obscene

Offensive to accepted standards of decency or modesty.

Let's move on to breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding is feeding an infant or young child with breast milk directly from human breasts and not from a baby bottle or other container.

Humans and animals have been breastfeeding their young for millions and millions of years, yet to some it is a un-natural approach to feeding a child. What I want to know is how can anyone, even if they do not have children think that breastfeeding is sexually explicit, pornographic or obscene in anyway?

I myself have breastfed all seven of my children. I have breastfed them in stores, restaurants, malls, parks, at the zoo, in the car, and wherever else I have needed to feed my baby when he/she was hungry. If anyone were to say anything to me about breastfeeding in a public place, I would have completely lost my temper and made the biggest deal anyone has ever heard before. Luckily not one of those ignorant people has yet to bother me.

Why do I call them ignorant people? For one thing it is obvious that they are so close minded that they actually see some sort of sexual act when a baby is nursing from their mother's breast. Who in their sick mind can honestly associate the two of them together! What's even more pathetic is those ignorant people who believe this, actually think that breastfeeding is disgusting, when that could not be farther from the truth.

Breastfeeding is one of the most amazing things I have ever done as a parent. Just the thought of anyone making it something dirty offends me an enormous amount and makes me so angry.

Usually I would not have a problem with other people's opinion, this however is something that I can not just sit back and shrug my shoulders on. Yes women have the choice to breastfeed or bottle feed and that is their choice. This however is not about that, this is about knowing the difference between right and wrong. Taking a photo off of a major site like Facebook just because a woman is breastfeeding her child is wrong. Kicking a woman out of a restaurant for breastfeeding her child is wrong. Not allowing a woman to sit on the bench in the mall and breastfeed her child is wrong. Making a mother feel uncomfortable about a natural act that has been going on for millions of years is wrong, period!

So to all of you people out there who see breastfeeding as disgusting, sexually explicit, pornographic or obscene, shame on you for even thinking that. You are the ones who are disgusting for even thinking or associating breastfeeding with anything other than what it is. A beautiful, amazing, wonderful experience that those who do breastfeed, know exactly what I am talking about.

Amen sister, as one former breast feeding mother to another. However, I'd love to see Octo-mom give it a go. I know I'm in a cruel mood tonight. Honestly, I wish her the best for the sake of her children.

    I agree!

Years ago people didn't even blink at a mother nursing a baby. In this world of nasty behavior everywhere, people are ridiculous. Great article Jeanne

I think it should be the accepted rule of thumb, not the exception to the rule!

In Europe, breastfeeding is the norm.

I too have breastfed in public, discreetly but I did. That is what breasts are for. Our society is insane.

Rarely do I use the word immature. But that's what it comes down to with persons who can't separate something as good and wholesome as breastfeeding from anything other than just that.

good points, I have no problem with breastfeeding, but I do admit, I would rather the mothers breast was covered in public. It's not pornography, I just think it's personal and private.

It is purely an American thing, we want socialized healthcare and still have issues with nudity? All I can say is, BRAVO to those who are open minded enough to realize that nudity does not necessarily = sex. AWESOME article, very well written keep up the wonderful work.

Great article. People really need to get their heads straight when it comes to this issue.
