Breastfeeding Twins or More

The benefits for breastfeeding babies are great. They include immunities available through the mommy's immune system to decreasing the risk of future asthma. For mommy's expecting more than one baby, the choice to breastfeed may seem like the less favorable choice. Maybe not, here are some nursing pointers.

The normal struggles of breast feeding moms is compounded with multiples such as: cracked breasts, concern of them eating enough, initial engorgement, and a sleepy Mommy. However, if you prepare and consider the benefits to be greater than the sacrifice than you can successfully breastfeed.

Set the time frame that you would like to nurse the babies as a goal.
Determine if you would like to nurse the babies for six weeks or one year. Consider your life style in this decision making process. Are you returning to work? Will you be a stay at home Mom? How many babies are you preparing for? These details will help you make the best choices.

Next determine if you will be supplementing feedings with formula.
If you determine to supplement bottle feedings then you can breastfeed baby one the first feeding of the day and give baby two formula. Then baby two would be breastfed at the second feeding and baby one would be fed receive formula via the bottle. This is one plan to get the babies the needed nutrition and bonding and still have free time.

If you determine to totally breastfeed each baby for six weeks to one year you will need help. You will need to ask others for assistance. You will need someone to help you clean and even cook on certain days. You will need to have a mature person who can help you through the initial breastfeeding patterns of a new mommy of twins or more. Here is one site that can give you help in that area: http://www.breastfeeding.com/directory/lcdirectory.html

You may also need to ask others for help around your home or hire someone to clean and do laundry twice a week. A nanny is also an option depending on your financial situation. Do not cross this possibility out. Investigate. There may be someone at your church or someone that a friend knows that needs a place to live. You could have an agreement based on housing. There are lots of possibilities..it never hurts to dream, imagine and ask around.

There is also a non profit organization that is dedicated to helping nursing mothers their website address is: http://www.llli.org// To find out more details on nursing two babies at one time and positioning check out this site: http://www.babycenter.com/0_breastfeeding-twins-or-multiples_8479.bc .
