Breath and Dry Ice

April Fox
he says
i think you'll live to be ninety-six
and my heart feels like dry ice
fogging up my eyes
all those years and will they be like
these?

sixty more of turbulence
floating happy
looking down and realizing
how i hate the altitude
it's not like it's been easy
in this life
let me stay until i'm done
let me let you breathe

right now is perfect
right now is everything, a fairy tale
and i always loved the ones
where the princess died
for her folly

dark outside the window
rain drips off the branches and i'm grateful for the light
music in the background, sharp and brainy, soft
cutting lyrics and unexpected instruments
cellos and things like that make us feel
evolved

if i'm no better
how can i be right?

it's fun to fly
i always land too hard
in all this time i never
asked you why
in all this time
i didn't need to know

i have memorized the way it feels
in case i let me forget.
