Silent Counting
A good method for beginners who are new to rapping, silent counting is the simplest way to control one's breathing. Beginners should take a deep breath as they count slowly to five. The breath should be held for another slow count of five, before being exhaled with one last slow count to five. After doing this several times, individuals can increase the count by one number at a time.
Counting Out Load
Once you've mastered the most basic of breathing techniques, you can move on to something slightly more advanced and beneficial to you as a rapper. Start by taking a deep breath, inhaling deeply as you make a loud "ah" or "oh" sound and sustaining the pitch while doing so. Count slowly to 10, but take care not to overdo it '" if you feel like you are running out of breath or your voice begins to crack, stop and start the entire process over. Once you reach 10, exhale completely. Once this process has been repeated several times, one can being to increase the count by one number each time.
On Your Back
Lie down on your back with a moderately heavy book on your midsection. Inhale and exhale slowly, monitoring the books movement as your breathe in and out. This provides resistance when inhaling, which will ultimately strengthen your lungs and increase your ability to hold your breath.
Slow Breaths
This method of breathing is best used immediately before a performance. Simply inhale deeply and completely, holding the breath for as long as you can. Keep track of the amount of time you are able to hold it and try to surpass that time on subsequent attempts. Don't strain yourself, however, and avoid choking or gasping for air.
Slumping
Slumping over, or bending at the waist, is another effective method for breathing. Breathing in this manner lets you notice the muscles that are used in your back, stomach and neck during the natural breathing process. It also lets your ribs close more slowly than normal, ultimately allowing for prolonged breaths.
Breathing Down Low
Bending at the knees and getting down on all fours are two other methods used to facilitate proper breathing techniques. Try to keep your chest steady while letting your ribs and back expand for best results.
