Breed Profile: Spinone Italano

Abby Greenhill
I fell in love with this dog the first time I saw it on TV at one of the dog shows. I have always been a lab lover, but I am putting some serious thought into my next dog being a Spinone Italano. There is something about that dog that is calling to me!

Spinone Italano - Disposition:

This dog is very powerful and strong and can be used as a hunting dog in any climate or region. The Spinone Italano works hard and plays even harder. There is no problem having kids around this breed, as he is gentle with kids whether he knows them or not. The Spinone will also get along well with other dogs, so if you have a multi-dog household the Spinone will fit right in.

He enjoys being with his 'people' and he is well suited to living in close quarters as he is a quiet dog. It sounds like he could make a good condo or apartment dog. This dog should not be depended up as a guard dog or attack dog. They have demonstrated that they prefer a real hunt compared to a training exercise for hunting, and they know the difference. The Spinone is a great swimmer and ice cold water won't bother him at all.

Spinone Italano - Physical Description:

The Height: 22 ½ to 27 ½ inches

The Weight: 61 to 85 pounds

The Coat: Wiry

The Colors: White, orange and white, orange roan*, white with brown markings.

Note: According to Wikipedia, roan* "Is defined generally as an even mixture of white and pigmented hairs that do not "gray out" or fade as the animal ages."

Spinone Italano - Health Problems:

Hip dysplasia is one thing to be aware of regarding this breed. There is also an inherited disease called Cerebellar Ataxia, which can lead to an abnormal gait.

The dog does require some exercise, but is happy with daily walks and a little exercise. His life expectancy is about 12 years. Grooming is a good brushing weekly. That's easy enough to accomplish!

The Spinone Italano is, as you have probably guessed, is an Italian dog and he is classified as a gun dog. The dog is often referred to as the Italian Pointer and is still Italy 's favorite all-purpose hunting dog.

Whether you want a hunting dog or just a great family dog, the Spinone Italano sounds like a good choice and one that I may be making in the future.

I love large dogs. Sounds like a good breed, but I'll take a mix from the Humane Society. :-)
