Bret Michaels Being Treated at Phoenix Hospital; Press Conference Scheduled Tuesday

Doctor Says Bret Michaels Fought to Remain Conscious During Hemorrhage

Rocker and Celebrity Apprentice co-star Bret Michaels remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition after suffering a subarachnoid hemorrhage, bleeding at the back of the head at the brain stem, just before midnight April 22.

Bret Michaels continues to be monitored by doctors around the clock as the first 7 to 10 days following something like this are the most critical "as an additional rupture or other complications may arise..," spokesperson Janna Elias said. It should be noted that the cause of the hemorrhage has not yet been determined.

According to a statement released on Bret Michaels' website, bretmichaels.com, he is being treated at the Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona.

Bret's location had previously been kept secret due to "the severity of his life threatening condition, the instantaneous way of which it presented itself, and respect for his family," Dr. Zabramski said.

A team of doctors, led by Dr. Joseph Zabramski, is currently treating the brain hemorrhage that landed Michaels in ICU more than a week ago. He will continue to undergo testing.

Dr Zabramski said, "Bret's sheer will to live and fully recover is undeniable," adding that Michaels told him, "what kept him alive at the moment of the hemorrhage was that he did not want his family to wake up and see him lying unconscious in the middle of the floor."

Michaels reportedly fought to remain conscious until he was able to get to the hospital where doctors were able to stabilize him.

Bret Michaels suffered a setback Tuesday when he was diagnosed with hyponatremia, a side effect of the brain hemorrhage caused by the lack of sodium in the blood. Hyponatremia causes seizures, however Michaels
has, thankfully, not had any.

In a statement released on his web site earlier in the week, Ms. Elias stated the former Poison frontman would be back on tour beginning May 26 in Fort Smith, Arkansas. However, that statement has since been removed from the site and it is unknown whether Bret Michaels will be well enough by then.

Another unknown is whether Michaels will make it as a finalist on this seasons Celebrity Apprentice. The show's season finale is scheduled for May 23.

Donald Trump said a contingency plan will need to be made if Michaels makes it that far. "We've never been confronted with anything like this," Trump said in an appearance on the Today Show.

Trump added that Bret is doing "really, really well" but he " can't imagine he's going to be on the finale, but he very well might be."

The latest developments in Michaels condition come on the heels of a recent emergency appendectomy in San Antonio, Texas just a week before his brain hemorrhage, as well as the rockers history of Type 1 Diabetes.

A press conference is scheduled for Tuesday at Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph Hospital. Doctors will give a full update on Bret's condition, treatment, and prognosis.

An update will be posted following the press conference.
