Bret Michaels Update 4/27 - Tests Show Setback, Hyponatremia

According to Bret Michaels website, bretmichaels.com and the singer's Facebook page, Tuesday's medical report brought a setback after the singer's subarachnoid hemorrhage diagnosis on April 23. Tests have shown that Michaels is now suffering from hyponatremia.

Hyponatremia is a condition in which the sodium levels of the body become abnormally low. Sodium is an electrolyte in the body and helps regulate the water levels in the fluids found in and around the body's cells. Hyponatremia may be caused by an underlying medical condition or it can be brought on by an excessive intake of water, such as during sports activities. When hyponatremia occurs, the sodium levels drop, the water levels in the body rise and the body's cells begin to swell. Brain swelling can be an aspect of hyponatremia and with Michaels' current condition, this must be a definite concern.

This swelling of the cells can cause a number of mild to severe health problems for the patient with hyponatremia. Typical treatments for hyponatremia include cutting back on fluids or in more severe cases intravenous and medications are required.

According to mayoclinic.com symptoms associated with hyponatremia include "nausea and vomiting, headache, confusion, lethargy, fatigue, appetite loss, restlessness and irritability, muscle weakness, spasms or cramps, seizures, decreased consciousness or coma."

Representatives on bretmichaels.com stated on Tuesday that Michaels' doctors are hopeful that Bret's condition will gradually improve. The posted statement on Bret Michaels' website said "even though today was a minor setback Doctors remain hopeful for a full recovery and plan to release more specific information next Monday."

Michaels has undergone a barrage of medical tests and remains in critical condition under 24-hour supervision in the intensive care unit at an undisclosed hospital.
