In week 3 of the 2009 NFL season the 2-0 49ers were at the 2-0 Vikings. The game started off with hard running by the San Francisco 49ers Frank Gore. On the first short run up the middle into the strength of the Vikings defensive line Frank Gore was injured. Gore left the game and never returned. Without the help of their pro-bowl runningback Frank Gore, the 49ers rookie runningback Glen Coffee got the nod to showcase his skills. The 49ers and the Vikings had a hard hitting battle in Minnesota. Both defenses play well in the first half. The Vikings held the 49ers to a horrible 0 of 6 in the first half and 0 for 11 on 3rd down conversions for the game. The Vikings defense force the 49ers 3 and out on many occasions. The game was a constant struggle for Minnesota.
After taking a early 10 point lead in the 2nd quarter, the 49ers offensive final put together a passing drive lead by quarterback Shawn Hill who ended the drive with a five yard touchdown pass to Vernon Davis. After Cedric Griffin intercepts Shawn Hill's pass, the Vikings offense is able to push the lead to Minnesota 13 San Francisco 7. The Vikings got another chance to score before half time. They started the drive at their own 20 yard line with 1:53 left on the clock and two timeouts. Brett Favre put a great drive together to set Minnesota up for a 44 yard Ryan Longwell field goal with :06 seconds left on the clock. It the right time for the 49ers defensive tackle Ray McDonald to get into the back field and block the field goal. The 49ers corner Nate Clements pick up the ball and runs into the end zone for a last second touchdown to give the 49ers the lead at half time 14 to 13.
The second half was as entertaining as the first half. Brett Favre pass all over the field against the 49ers defense. Adrian Peterson was held to a season low 85 rushing yards on 19 attempts and 0 touchdowns. But in the end it would all once a gain lie on the hands of Brett Favre, He starts the final drive of the game at his own 20 with 1:29 and 0 timeouts. It only take Favre six completions to go 80 yards ending with a perfect 32 yard touchdown pass to Greg Lewis. Brett Favre magical pass is the best play so far in the NFL season. The Vikings are now 3-0 and on the way to win the NFC north. The 49ers are 2-1 with a lead in the NFC west. This game could be playoff rematch.
