Brett Favre Goat Saved from Becoming Dinner

Robert Dougherty
Brett Favre goat stories usually come when Brett Favre blows a big game. But pairing Brett Favre with a goat actually happened in his new home. The Brett Favre goat, however, wasn't something that fans brought to the Metrodome to celebrate Brett Favre becoming a Viking. In fact, the Brett Favre goat would have been dinner if authorities hadn't discovered it in a trunk. All the Brett Favre saga was missing over these last few years was a goat, so the Brett Favre goat filled that bill and got to stay alive all at once.

The bizarre story from Minnesota involves a Minnesota couple who were taking a goat home to eat for dinner. Janelle Riopel and boyfriend Sonny Yang of St. Paul, Minnesota picked up the Brett Favre goat from Wisconsin and were set to cook it, but when they went to fix their car at an auto shop, their meal was discovered.

Having a couple pick up a goat and take it home to eat is semi-weird enough. But it got into the national headlines because the goat was covered in the purple and gold colors of the Minnesota Vikings, with Brett Favre's number shaved onto the goat. Riopel claims that the Brett Favre goat already looked like that before they picked it up in Wisconsin, of all places.

Green Bay and the state of Wisconsin are feeling betrayed that Brett Favre went to the division-rival Vikings, weeks after he said he would stay retired. The fact that the goat was made up with Favre's new colors in Wisconsin may signal that there are still some Favre fans in the state - or that someone took out his or her's bitterness out on a goat.

The Brett Favre goat was ultimately spared from being dinner, as Riopel and Yang had to sign it over to animal control. Riopel was denied a meal, but got some national exposure and the nickname "Goat Lady" in compensation.

While the Brett Favre goat is free to spend the rest of his life in obscurity, away from the spotlight, Favre himself continues to ingratiate himself with the Vikings, as he is scheduled to start the entire first half of their next preseason game.

But the goat population in Wisconsin may want to take extra precautions before the human Favre returns to Green Bay in early November. Whether Green Bay fans would be more likely than Vikings fans to eat future Favre goats afterwards is unclear.
