Brett Favre Hurts the Jets

John Krutz
Brett Favre has been the biggest football story of the year and the season has not yet started. This is not a story that will disappear either, it will continue throughout the course of the season. However, Favre may regret coming back this year, I am sure he still wants to play but not for a losing team and that's what the Jets will be, and the Jets may be slightly better off for a season or two this is not the path that will lead them to the Super Bowl.

Last season Favre led Green Bay to the NFC championship game, but lost to the Giants. To come that close late in his career had to sting and that may be one of his main reasons for the comeback. However, the Jets are not the Packers. Last year the Packers were an all-around good team, Favre had a great year but it was his first great year in a few seasons. He was helped by the teams great running game and its aggressive defense, which was one of the best in the league. On the other hand, the Jets are coming off another poor season. This is a franchise that needs a great quarterback and Brett Favre in his prime could have helped, but Favre is way past his prime.

The past few seasons the Jets have played conservative football. They tried to limit their turnovers and win the battle of field position. Favre has never been a quarterback in that style of offense. He's a gunslinger and prone to making errors, after all he holds the record for the most interceptions of all time. I just don't think Favre will be able to play conservatively and that will hurt the team. The Jets have no explosive players; their best receiver (Lavernius Coles) is a possession receiver, not the explosive receiver that Favre is used to playing with. The running game is also based on a running back that grinds yards, not the big game breaking runs. Thomas Jones averaged less than four yards a carry last year and around 70 yards a game. Last year Favre had Ryan Grant who averaged over 5 yards a carry. This is a big downgrade for Favre and will definently put more pressure on his diminished passing abilities.

While I am sure Favre can still compete at the NFL level, his gunslinger ways will hurt the Jets. They should be trying to build a young quarterback now while their team is still not close to being a Super Bowl contender. Favre may play two seasons but I truly think this is his last. So where will that leave the Jets? A few draft choices shorter than before. The Jets were in no position to get to the Super Bowl before Favre got there and now that he is there, they're still in no position to get to the Super Bowl.

Some people may be happy that Favre has returned to the NFL and it may be nice to watch this great player play with a new team. Favre may prove me wrong and play great with Jets, but I believe it is unlikely. I think the Jets and their fans will regret this move for many seasons. So Jets fans enjoy watching this season with a legend at quarterback, because in the off season I am guessing you be in the same place you were this past off season, looking for a starting quarterback. And since developing a quarterback takes time the Jets will be another year away from having a great quarterback in his prime.
