Brett Favre: The Soap Opera is Over

Brian Munger
Yes! Thank God the football offseason is coming to an end! Have Mercy! That silly Brett Favre soap opera finally came to a conclusion! It's about time!

While I'm glad the drama is over, I'm still disappointed in Brett Favre. Why couldn't this man just stay home? He now plays for the lowly New York Jets! How much success can he possibly have on the Jets? It's clear that he only wants to stay so he can compete for a Super Bowl trophy, so him being on the Jets does not really bode well for his dreams. Brett is a likable guy, so I'll be rooting for him, but at the same time, I'll be laughing at his face if he fails miserably. That's what you get for screwing with the Green Bay Packers, Mr. Favre! I hope you learned a valuable lesson! I hope you learned that you do not own Packer Land!

His behavior was so indecisive and confusing and selfish, that I feel no pity for him not getting his job back at Green Bay. I had to chuckle a little bit during his press conference with the Jets after the trade was made official. I chuckled at one of his statements. In response to how he would blend in with the team and how the Jets would perform with him, he said "I'm just one man . . . one of 53." Oh, so NOW he is just one man. Geez, from the way he acted with the Packers, you'd think he was 20 men. Favre totally disrespected the Packers with his antics and acted as if he was bigger than anybody else. He acted as if he was the most important player in the NFL and he assumed that he could magically return to the Packers as a starter despite retiring months earlier . . . and missing all of the spring and summer practices. To me, that is not acting as "just one man." That, in my eyes, is acting as "just one baby."

Why can't more players try to be like John Elway? Elway went out on top. Elway went out with pride and dignity. That's what Brett Favre should have done. Sure, Brett didn't win a Super Bowl last season, but he came pretty close to getting there and he had an outstanding regular season. Despite the lack of a Super Bowl trophy, last season was still remarkable enough for him to leave on a high note.

But no, Brett had to be a stubborn baby. Now, unfortunately, we will have to add him to the infamous list of icons that tried to return to their respective sports after retiring . . . and ended up failing. I think Brett should've watched Rickey Henderson as he tried to make a comeback through the minor leagues. Or he should've watched Michael Jordan as he tried to regain his star power for the Washington Wizards. Jordan and Henderson will always be remembered as legends in their sports, but they have asterisks on their resumes that make fans lose a little respect for them. They were stubborn and thought they could perform at an all-star level, no matter how old they were and no matter what team they were on. Their stubbornness got the best of them. Now, the stubbornness will get the best of Brett Favre.
