Brett Favre: My Used to Be Favorite Football Player

Please Go Home and Stop My Card from Hemorrhaging..Please

Rose Richmond
When I saw the low price on the Brett Favre Football Card, almost 7 years ago, I couldn't help but scoop it up. I have always thought Brett, could be one of the greatest players who ever lived. I idolized him and watched all of his games.Though a Dallas Cowboys Fan at heart, Brett has always been a favorite for me.

Now, in the last few years, not only has the value of my card tanked, like the economy, but Brett is real close to becoming the NFL's Biggest Joke. The first retirement was traumatic for all of Green Bay's Fans and for Brett Fans everywhere. We were so sure, Green Bay would be in the dumper if Brett were gone. I think we all knew that was not the case, but we wanted to hold on to the legend, just a bit longer.

Obviously, so did Brett Favre. Now, after the New York Jets, retirement again, an operation and so much drama, we are all in a tailspin, he is starting the same ole crap again. June, July and August are starting to be known as "The Brett Favre Clown Show" season. He actually starts coming out in rumor around the beginning of May. People start to speculate what will be the latest verdict on his return. Then by July, we are watching to see if he shows up in training camp for someone. With his graying beard and obvious appearance of too much wear & tear, Brett sits for interview after interview, stone faced and confident. He obviously believes everything, he has told himself.

Among the circle of sportscasters that write or are on the tube, Brett has become, "OK, lets see which direction the wind is blowing this week in the Favre drama"! As week after week passes and it gets ever closer to Football Season, the chatter gets louder and takes on a circus type attitude. It's all about the hype now. It just fills in time spaces or provides article fodder for the needy reporters out there. Everyone knows Brett is washed up, yet they continue to use him to get their paychecks. I can't imagine the conversation behind the scenes. It would have to be a total laugh session. You kind of feel sorry for Brett now. He looks a little desperate and sad. He just keeps sticking his face in the public and letting them laugh at him. No one wants to see him come back...sorry Brett, not even the die hard fans of Green Bay.

I would like to have seen Brett go out with some class. It would have made my Football Card more of a Souvenir, rather than a noise maker for my grandchildrens bicycles. Thanks Brett...Thanks for letting your male ego, screw your fans. I sort of feel like Brett has taken all of those years of success and flushed them. He had such a wonderful reputation and such potential to go out a Superstar. Now, all anyone will remember is what a joke he has become. Anytime you mention "Brett Favre" in a conversation today, you get snickers, ah craps, and damn, not agains. Hell of a reputation there Brett. People have become tired of hearing about you and what you are coming out with this time. You are becoming the laughing stock of the NFL.

Now as we approach another season, it is the Minnesota Vikings who are vying for Brett's great abilities. Even if he only plays part of the season, they can put in the records books that the Great Brett Favre was a Viking. OK, whatever makes your boat float, I guess. However, all of the country is tired of this dog and pony show that is Brett Favre. We all just want to go back to watching Football. No Brett Favre, No great comeback, No drama, just good ole fashioned Football and the new drama that comes naturally with the game.

I would make a special request of Mr. Brett Favre. Take your old butt to the house and let the youngsters play this young man's game. You have tons of money, commercials, a good family and a partial reputation. Please go home and stop my card from bleeding to death. Stop the rest of your legacy from bleeding to death. Are you man enough to call it quits? At some point, you need to be. After all, you are a grown man for Christ's Sake........Act like it. You will never be as good as you once were, because that is the way life works. When you are through, you are through. Operations, different teams or nothing else is going to give you back your "Glory Days"! Stop making yourself and the people who loved you for so long, look so STUPID.....Let us keep our dignity and you keep what is left of yours. We will think more of you for doing that, than painfully watching you ruin what is left. Your cooperation is appreciated.

    Sad :)

I guess we have the same sort of 'issue' with opera singers whose 'farewell' performances just don't seem to ever end. I really can't begrudge them, though... It's all they knew to do before and I guess, as much as they might bemoan the baggage of fame while they were at their peak, the prospect of not being in that same old familiar world anymore is too scary for them. O well... as long as he can still deliver football games, there'll be teams that will pay to have him. We can always just root for the other teams/players instead. ;o)

Oh, you definitely aren't the only one frustrated with Farve's flip-flopping on the retirement issue (reminds me of Muhammad Ali at the end of the 70's)!

Dear Rose: This is probably why I don't pay any attention to football players...lol. Read my article on the parking meter/garage fiasco in Chicago for REAL problem(s)! We can all keep the memory of Brett in the movie with Matt Dillon and Cameron Diaz, when she ends up with him as her boyfriend. ("There's Something About Mary") Sorry about your card, but more sorry about my parking situation in the city of Chicago (not to even mention the 10.25% sales tax!)
