Brian Regan's Live Stand-Up Comedy: Review

Max Golden
This winter, I was fortunate enough to see Brian Regan performing as part of his "Epitome of Hyperbole" tour. I'd never been to see a stand-up comedian in person before, and I have to say, I was very impressed.

I've been a fan of Brian Regan's specials and talk show appearances for some time now. He's known for his clean-cut material and every day observational subject matter. What's surprising about his style of comedy is his ability to take a subject that has been comedically strip-mined by dozens of performers for many years, and find a way to turn the topic on its head, coming out with new and interesting material. It's this fresh perspective on intensely relatable material, that makes Brian Regan such a rare stand-up experience.

Heading into the show at the Savannah Civic Center, my expectation and my excitement were both running high. Brian Regan's previous specials really had me laughing and I anticipated him living up to them completely. What I did not expect, however, was for him to blow them both away with a non-stop assault of funny.

I know, know, this is going to sound grandiose, especially describing a show called "The Epitome of Hyperbole" but I have never heard a stand-up special that had me laughing out loud so consistently for such an extended period of time. Lest you think me an anomaly, I would like to point out that the entire auditorium, which was packed, was rocking with laughter. In the latter half of the show I literally found myself rubbing the sides of my jaw, the muscles sore from such prolonged smiling and laughter.

He completely killed. The crowd would explode with riotous bouts of hysteria at every punchline. Obviously his set was finely tuned, but I was equally impressed by his willingness to improvise. After a new joke, he would often comment, to further laughter, on how it went over, and what he might change. Near the end of the show, select members of the the crowd, now drunk with laughter, even shouted out requests for classic bits from his previous specials. To his credit, Brian Regan graciously rolled with the punches, thanking them for their fandom and closing the show with a sort of "Greatest Hits" by request.

Overall, this was a phenomenal experience and one I highly recommend to any fan of comedy. His tour is running across North America, through the summer up until the end of the year. If he's coming to a city near you, do yourself a favor and check out the show. Otherwise, you can always pick up the DVD, curl up on the couch and prepare yourself for an evening of laughter.

Good review! Brian Regan is a genius comedian who seems to always have fresh material. Last week he performed at the Winstar in Thackerville, OK. Check out my review @ http://simhilarity.com

Oh I am so jealous that you got to see Brian Regan live! I've seen a couple of his routines on Comedy Central and he's my favorite comedian at the moment. I love when he talks about two cookies not being one serving because he eats a whole sleeve in a sitting. His pop tart instruction bit is hysterical too. I'm definitely going to buy his DVD. Thanks for your review!
