It has been almost two years since Bright Eyes released "I'm Wide Awake It's Morning" and "Digital Ash in a Digital Urn" simultaneously, now they're back with a brand new LP entitled "Noise Floor." Noise Floor is a compilation of songs recorded between 1998 and 2005 that had yet to be released on a CD. It tracks Conor Oberst's journey from a boy screaming songs into a four-track machine in his basement to becoming an indie icon, selling millions of CDs worldwide.
I Will Be Grateful for This Day
This is the second song on the album and has more of an electronic sound, comparable to the songs on Digital Ash in a Digital Urn. It tells the story of two of Oberst's friends, one a love interest, the second a drug addict who "put a needle in his arm to calm his handsome hell." This song is one of the better ones on the CD; it has an upbeat yet reminiscent vibe, but is devoid of the imagery and metaphor that are characteristic of many Bright Eyes songs.
The Trees Get Wheeled Away
Conor Oberst first played this song during his network television debut on the David Letterman show a few years back. It has a slower, more folk-ish sound and is one of the most honest and beautiful songs I have ever heard. Oberst sings of the drawbacks of fame in a round-about way as to not point fingers at any one person in specific. This song is definitely one of Oberst's best.
I've Been Eating (For You)
This is one of the slowest songs on Noise Floor, but its perfect for just sitting around feeling sorry for yourself especially after a break-up. The only instrument is the guitar playing in the background and Oberst singing of a girl who has recently broken up with him to be with another one of his friends. This song is more of a poem really, and it's not something to jam out to in the car, but it is good in its own way and its obvious Oberst wrote this one a while back.
Happy Birthday to Me (Feb. 15)
This song is my favorite on the whole CD and it was my favorite on "A Collection of Songs" as well. This is a newer version of the same song, it is a lot clearer than the original version and has a little bit faster beat. Just like "I've Been Eating for You" this song is perfect to listen to when you're having a bad day. Oberst sings about growing up and the struggles he has to face. "All eyes on the calendar, another year I claim of total indifference" is the first line of the song and pretty much sums up what the whole song is about. I absolutely love this song, and if nothing else, Noise Floor is worth purchasing just for this one song.
Noise Floor is in stores everywhere right now and I would highly recommend picking it up. It's a great addition to any music collection and has a variety sounds and musical instruments so it's sure to please everyone!
