Overhead Lighting
A great way to add fun lighting to a kid's room is to combine it with a ceiling fan. When you do this, a whole world of possibilities opens up. Check out www.ceilingfanoutlet.com for a great selection of ceiling fans for kids' rooms. For the boys a classic is the ceiling fan shaped like the nose of a WWII fighter plane. There is also a fan that includes an applique to make the fan look like an actual F4U Corsair dive bombing! There are also sports related fixtures that have baseball bats for fan blades and the light is a baseball.
There is also selection for girls. There is a carousel themed fixture has no fan, but an actual merry-go-round that rotates around the fixture. There are also a number of fixtures in pastel colors.
If you want to get really wild, consider a disco ball or rotating party lights in the overhead fixture. It's not terribly practical and you'll need secondary lighting for reading and the like. However, your kid will flip out when they see you've turned their bedroom into their own personal rave party.
Desk Lighting
The lowly desk lamp is often overlooked when decorating. In a kid's room, this is a chance for some really fun ideas. A nice selection of fun desk lamps can be found at www.stacksandstacks.com. These are traditional desk lamps with fun bases. You could consider baseball or NASCAR for the boys or hearts or ballerina slippers for the girls.
Alternative Lighting
While these ideas are not practical for the primary lighting of a kid's room, they make wonderful accent lighting in the room.
The Lava Lamp is a great accent for boys or girls rooms. Check out www.lavaworld.com for a large selection of styles and colors. If you're in the mood to spoil your kid, go with the Colossus. It's a four foot tall Lava Lamp that doubles as an accessory table. Sure, it's about $1,300 with shipping, but isn't your child worth it?
Finally there's neon. Neon adds a level of "cool" to the room that kids of any age would love. Consider swinging by www.everything-neon.com for a custom made neon sign. What kid wouldn't love his or her own name in lights? If you don't want to spend the extra for a custom sign, there are neon bordered clocks and pictures and any number of neon sculptures or just about any animal, sports, or item you can imagine.
