Brightened like Lights Strung

April Higney
A tiny tree on a table,
last year's Christmas day.
Rough financial times,
but heart sent a holiday.
Boxed gifts in the mailbox,
a letter unknown,
brightened like lights strung,
in kindness shown.
A tear fell,
as excitement played out on my child's face.
It didn't matter, nothing under the tree for me.
Made my phone calls to bring closeness between miles of space.
I cooked a small dinner,
set a table for four,
one invited guest,
though I imagined family, many more.
Little girl loved, played and laughed,
mommy smiled, for her enjoying the day,
hoping the next Christmas to come,
would have Nana and Pop-pop enjoying in her play.
The hustle of aunts, uncles, and cousins,
popping popcorn to string on the tree.
Watching their faces brightened like lights strung,
opening their gifts of love from me.
