Bring on the Fair Tax

F.T. Ogletree
The word "tax" itself has always been associated with something negative. Taxes are a part of almost everything that we do on a daily basis. In this country we are all in need of tax relief. The fair tax is a solution to the many years of tax disparity. In simple words in America we have suffered too long from unfair taxes.

Why do we even pay taxes? There is nothing stated in the United States constitution that says that we are obligated to pay income taxes. Although most people dislike the idea of paying taxes, yet they would feel more comfortable if there was some fairness in the process. I was first introduced about the concept of the fair tax by listening to Neal Boortz and Sen. John Linder of the 7th district of Georgia. The proposed legislation for the fair tax written Senator Linder says that it will repeal corporate and individual income taxes, payroll taxes, self-employment taxes, capital gains taxes, estate taxes and gift taxes replacing it with a revenue-neutral personal consumption tax. It also would prevent the government from withholding federal taxes from our paychecks. Many people are not aware of this proposed legislation. There are many skeptics that are trying to discredit the fair tax mainly because they have not adequately researched what it entails. As a result of people being misinformed the proposed flat tax failed. According to Forbes, a flat tax is a percentage charge applied equally to everyone, regardless of their income level, investments, or other financial characteristics. There fair tax will not increase taxes but instead it will prevent taxpayers from living above their means, which could eventually reduce consumer debt.

For years Americans have been subjected to many unfair tax practices. The fair tax is the answer to our tax problems, everybody will be taxed equally. The current tax principles are highly unfair. It is imperative that we get more informed about the fair tax. This means that we should call on our representatives from our perspective districts to gather more support for the fair tax.
