Bring Hollywood Home by Collecting Movie Posters

Movie Poster Collecting is a Growing Hobby with Several Unique Rewards

Jason Gallagher
Judging from the massive amounts of money movies make from the box office at the local multiplex or theater, millions of people love movies. A great way to show your love of movies is with a hobby that is growing in popularity: movie poster collecting. Movie poster collecting is a great past time with the main reward being able to gaze at an official poster of a favorite movie day in and day out. What makes this particular hobby so enticing is that no two collections are the same, and everyone can tailor their collection to their own specific desires.

Of course the first logical step is figuring out what exactly an official movie poster is. Generally, an official movie poster is double sided and twenty seven by forty inches in size. The double sided nature of these posters has the reverse of the image shown on the back, for backlighting purposes at movie theaters. Beginning collectors need to be a little weary of single sided posters, especially with recent movies, as these can be from the dollar bin at a discount store or reprints. The general tip off here is the single side, and of course the size just will not be there.

Having an idea of where you are going to display your collection is also a great idea. Hanging a twenty seven by forty work of art on your wall seems like an easy task, but these things can easily take up a lot of wall space. Not every room in the house will work as a movie poster display wall, so finding areas that suit these unique needs can be a little challenging.

Another are that needs to be addressed prior to breaking into movie poster collecting is storage of the collection. While posters can be rolled to reduce storage needs, purchasing frames is the only way to maintain quality and adequately protect your investment. Movie poster sized frames can be purchased for as little as ten dollars or backlight theater style marquee displays can be purchased for several hundred dollars. Beginning collectors should purchase a basic frame to start with and work their way up to the more elaborate display methods. Again, since condition is paramount when dealing with any type of paper based hobby, frames and rolling for storage eliminate creases and pin holes. Since some movie posters can trend toward several hundred dollars, protecting this investment is important and can not be stressed enough.

Breaking into the movie poster collecting hobby is surefire way to bring a piece of the movies home. Finding a particular poster can be challenging, but is often not impossible. If you want to start a conversation with anyone just hang a poster from a favorite movie on your wall, you will be surprised how many people loved that one as well.
