Bring Passport to Mexico and Canada?

Debi Rideout
Yes, that is right. From now on when you are crossing U.S. borders into Mexico and Canada a person will need their passport or other special documentation. The rules are changing June 1, 2009. If you haven't gotten your passport yet do not panic, they are willing to do a background check on you while you wait since the rules have just changed. However, be prepared for a long wait. There are a few exceptions to the rule. For example if you are younger than 16 and traveling with your family you may not need a passport. Also, if you live in a state like New York, and you have a microchip in your driver's license then you do not need a passport to cross the borders.

There are two passports you can buy right now. For about $100 you can buy a passport that is good for flying as well as crossing country borders. For about $45 you buy a passport that is good for crossing land borders only. A person will now have to plan on having a passport from now on if they are planning to travel into the U.S. or out of the U.S.

My first thoughts on this are that it is kind of a pain to do. Why did the United States suddenly decide we need to have passports to cross into Mexico and Canada? Why are we suddenly increasing our security? Is there a reason to be concerned?

I think it is normal to have these kinds of thoughts. Anything new and that costs a person extra money is usually looked at more closely. Planning a vacation is now going to cost even more money because now we are going to have to buy passports too. Plus, no spur of the moment trips are going to happen until we all have passports to visit Canada and Mexico.

On the other hand, I guess we have always had security problems. The United States has been tightening up security ever since September 11th happened. What a sad day that was for our country. I know I was personally affected by the incident. I knew some people that died that day. I really do not want our country to ever have something like that happen again. If tightening up security helps with our country's safety; then who am I to complain?

Plus, we have had border control issues that some people are very troubled about. I bet they are super happy that more security checks are being put in place. I guess getting a passport is kind of a good idea. I just wish it was not hitting me so hard in the pocketbook. I am a gal who likes to keep her money. However, safety is far greater for peace of mind then having some extra cash on hand. What do you think?

This is quite controversial down on the border where I live...Interested to see if it has any impact whatsoever on curbing illegal border crossing...doubtful. Good report!

I guess this is a step in the right direction, but why did it take so long? It also seems like poor timing for vacation travelers.
RE: Justice, many, if not all, laws essentially inconvenience the law abiding.

Good information. I used to go to Canada all the time and not have to worry
    about this.

When I was stationed in San Diego in 1990-1991, we could just cross the border into TJ any time we wanted to take a day trip. Now it sounds like we have another well-intentioned new law that's only gonna make it tougher for the law-abiding to get around while the illegals will still continue to break into the US at will (we used to watch them nightly almost every time me and my boys took a night trip to Tijuana; there was a huge, obvious hole right in the 12-foot barbed-wire fence).

Great information! I didn't realize you needed a passport if traveling to Canada or Mexico. I would go to Canada before I would go to Mexico. Thank you for sharing! :-)

Yeah, it is kind of a pain. I think it's probably for the best, but now I need to get one and they aren't cheap. No more quick trips to Tijuana;-) But I stopped those years ago!lol Very good info, many people don't know about the law change in policy.

Excellent reminder about passport changes for those who are traveling to Canada and Mexico now. Otherwise, they could get a surprise!

Safety first in this day and age! Super topic, Debi! I've been hearing a lot about this lately! I feel we need the security, so I am willing to pay for peace of mind! Well stated! :)
