Bring on the Trouble or Testing Our Faith

Day 59 - a Year with God

Marilyn Quinn
You know you are growing spiritually when you no longer pray for all your troubles to go away, but you pray for the strength to weather any storm that comes your way. Troubles and trials are a part of life. Just when we get through one thing, another will be not far behind. Sometimes they just pile up on us all at once.

I used to be the one asking for God to just make it all go away. Take my troubles from me and let me have peace. Now I know that I am to bring peace with me and carry it no matter what is happening in my life.

It is not about living a trouble free life, but in having the strength and the faith to take on each trouble as it comes. Without trials, how would we know that we are growing spiritually? If nothing bad ever happened, you would have peace; provided you weren't worrying over what might happen. But if nothing bad ever happened, how would you know you were making progress? What would you compare to?

It would almost be like sending our kids to school to learn and then never testing them? Would we know they had absorbed and learned the material? We could fool ourselves into thinking they were learning and growing, but the first time they had to apply that knowledge and they couldn't do it, then we would know better.

Well, God never granted my prayer to take away my troubles. Everyday I have opportunities to apply what I am learning. To use my patience, to use my compassion, to do for others and submit to my husband.

And everyday I am able to gauge where I am, because I can see how far I have come and I can see where I still need to work. I am grateful that everyday I am not given the equivalent of a final exam or major test. Sometimes I have an uneventful day, or it seems easier because of my growing self. Then some days I get a pop quiz from life. I find myself passing more often than not nowadays.

"Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance." James 1:2-3
