Bringing "Democracy" to Television

Matthew Paulson

Since the early 1940's we have had the technology to beam video and audio into other people's homes, but the technology was so expensive that only large broadcasting companies and news stations could afford to do it. The barriers of entry were rather high, and unless you could afford very expensive production equipment and made some really high quality content, chances are no one would ever see the idea dancing in your head.

In the last three years, the whole system got turned on its head. Consumers could now use inexpensive digital cameras and free video editing software instead of professional tools which would cost tens of thousands of dollars. Instead of having to fight to get on any sort of television show or television network, you can now bring your content directly to the people over the internet. Now hundreds of internet based television shows on all sorts of topics are available for download at a click of your mouse.

A group of developers got together and decided to make a product which would act like a television, but only on your computer. After hours of programming, they came up with a very innovative tool called Democracy Player.

The software is available for free from their website and is about a 20 MB download. The software installation is rather simple, you merely select your language and choose what types of files you would like Democracy Player to handle, and you're done! When you launch the program for the first time, it will ask you where you want to store your videos and give you the opportunity to search for files to put in its database.

Once you get Democracy Player up and running you will be presented with its channel guide, in it you can brwose through various categories, such as "News", "Politics", "Religion", "Science", "Sports", and "Technology. You can browse and find a show that you will like. Once you find a winner, simply click add and it will add it to your list of channels which appears in a sidebar, and whenever a new becomes available, Democracy Player will download the video for you.

Democracy Player does a lot of interesting things behind the scenes that make it so you can have a pleasant video watching experience. It will automatically handle bit-torrent files and download them for you so you can watch your shows without having to setup a separate torrent file. It also parses XML files in order to display its channel directory, giving you once centralized place to search for shows that you might like.
