Bringing Home Education into the Classroom

I think the idea of bringing the success of Home Education in the Classroom is a brilliant idea. But I also believe that Home education is a way of thinking, it's a life style in of itself. It is not simply just doing schoolwork at home.

The things that make Home Education Successful are not specific books, or tools. It's the thoughts, ideas, goals and objectives about how to obtain success.

But that success differs depending on the student, and once classrooms begin to implement that. They will be well on their way.

The idea that one is enjoying a book, simply because of its topic, and content will motivate the reader to continue reading it, and sharing his or her review with others, is much more inspiring and I believe educational than reading an assigned book because its on a list of teaching materials.

Conducting experiments and investigating in a yard, means so much more, and is learned more in depth by a student who is highly curious and loves the outdoors, in comparison to one who hates to get dirty and or is afraid of animals.

I recently took a tour of a BIG Picture School, in which the student's entire high school years were based on their own personal goals and objectives.

If a student wanted to be a fashion designer, her or she would spend their four years, becoming the best fashion designer he or she could be, while receiving credits for high school and college at the same time, and even committing to several hours of community service each week, and working as an intern in the fashion industry twice a week.

Just imagine if all school were set up to meet the objectives in which they say they actually strive to achieve, we would probably have fewer dropouts and more college attendees.

In fact The BIG Pictures school has 90 % of its students graduate, and 80% attend a four-year college.

As I walked down the halls, students were busy working on projects, giving oral presentations, and even running the school itself.

Students had taken on major projects such as building the school library, obtaining books as donations, and organizing a system to creating the work out room full of exercise equipment, a music room, and cafeteria.

Not because someone told them to, or they needed to do it, in order to gradate, but because they wanted to, had an interest in, and had the support they need to succeed, and thus they graduated as a result of it.

Using the mindset that makes home education successful has also made the BIG picture school as success. There are a few, but they are popping up all over the U.S.

And next year as a high school freshman, my son will be a BIG picture student, and I a BIG picture parent.

I think I'm just as excited as he is. If only there were schools like this when I was younger, and had teachers, sorry advisors such as those at the BIG Picture schools.

Yes advisors, there are no teachers at the BIG picture schools, and student and advisors are on a first name basis. Everyone is there for the same reason.

To see students succeed, and this is the way Home Education is taught, and the reason for its success.
