Brisk or Power Walking Vs. A Long Stroll

Which Gives the Greatest Health Benefit?

Dee Dee Smith
For quite a while I took long, leisurely walks hoping to lose weight, tone and improve my overall health. Recently however, I've begun a power walking routine. That is, I walk at a very rapid rate and involve the use of my arms as well. I've also walked with very small hand weights to help build my heart rate. My leisure walk usually lasts about 45 minutes to an hour, and I go a distance of about 1-1.25 miles. I chit chat or even sing as I go along. When I power walk, I walk for about 25 minutes and cover about the same distance (although I hope to increase my speed over time). All things considered, it sounds about equal. The difference is I walk for a longer time on my leisure walk, and walk much faster on my power walk. So which gives me the better benefit?

So far I believe that I've seen better results with power walking. First off, I sweat quite a bit when power walking as opposed to my leisurely stroll. Secondly, I know it is a better cardio workout, which is beneficial to my overall health. Lastly, because it is more aerobic, I'm seeing better results in toning, especially in my thighs, buttocks and even in my tummy area. The downside is that I do not experience the relaxation I did with leisure walks. Strolling along one can really appreciate nature, clear one's mind and experience a great sense of peace. I don't get this experience with power walking.

Most studies have shown that walking at any pace is helpful. Doctors have found that walking improves one's overall mental health, lowers blood pressure, can temporarily improve the immune system and may possibly even minimize one's risk for certain diseases. It can even aid in weight loss for those who are more sedentary. But if you are already active, long strolls won't help much in losing weight. To burn calories quickly and tone the muscles, picking up the pace will make a huge difference.

Considering the results of my study, I have decided to mix up my walking routine. Most days I power walk, and other days (when I have the time), I take a long stroll. This ensures that I don't get bored, and also keeps me from overworking certain muscles. I also now get the benefits of both power walking and strolling. When strolling I relax, meditate, and pray. Sometimes I stroll with a group of friends and it's a great time for us to catch up. Power walking on the other hand is helping me to reach my weight loss goal and get me in optimum shape. They are a perfect pair. I don't think I'd want one without the other.
