Bristol Palin on 'Dancing With the Stars' -- Should the Progress of the Other Season 11 Celebrities Be Ignored?

The "Underdog" is All that Matters?

Bristol Palin on "Dancing with the Stars" will compete for the mirror ball trophy along with Kyle Massey and Jennifer Grey. Bristol has survived elimination despite falling to the bottom of the leaderboard more than once based on viewers' votes. The advancement of Bristol Palin is due to her popularity and on being the underdog. Says executive producer Conrad Green, as reported at Today, "Showing improvement is almost more important than being a brilliant dancer, because it gives the audience a sense of being involved in your progress."

Richard Huff of NYDailyNews.com says the anger over Bristol Palin on "Dancing with the Stars" surviving elimination is like an "artificial Christmas tree."

The season finale of "Dancing with the Stars," season 11, with Bristol Palin, Kyle Massey and Jennifer Grey, occurs on November 22 and 23 of 2010. Semi-finalist Brandy, who grew into an excellent DWTS dancer, has been eliminated from the finals. "We were all rooting for her, and it's a shame not to have her in the finals," said executive producer Conrad Green. "I don't like losing Brandy."

"Face it, part of the appeal of reality shows is watching an unexpected star emerge. Still, there's always a Sanjaya, who inexplicably stays longer than expected," says Richard Huff of NYDailyNews.com. "To that end, the outrage feels a little bit like an artificial Christmas tree: It looks great from afar, but once you get up close, you start to notice it's plastic."

Has Richard Huff actually watched season 11 of "Dancing with the Stars"? Because the thousands of people who have left comments expressing their outrage, whether they be at the official "Dancing with the Stars" website, at "Dancing with the Stars" fan sites, at news sites and at blogs, have.

Furthermore, Sanjaya Malakar didn't win. Bristol Palin on "Dancing with the Stars," however, probably will.

Says Huff, "Letting the public weigh in means sometimes the best dancer doesn't win. That's okay, because without the public part, you'd be left with nothing more than the ballroom dancing on PBS."

So, is Huff separating his praise - part of the public gets it and part of the public doesn't? Public sentiments of all types are okay if you're truly advocating for the public.

New viewers of season 11 won't be deceived in season 12

Bristol Palin is labeled an underdog who showed improvement. That type of label dismisses all of the other "Dancing with the Stars" season 11 participants who showed improvement also. Because Bristol Palin had no showbiz experience, her improvement is considered more important than the improvements of other participants, including former basketball player Rick Fox and "The Hills" Audrina Patridge.

Says Green on Bristol Palin, "You're watching her come out of her shell, and it's a rather lovely story to watch."

That's nice and all, but does that deserve the mirror ball trophy?

If Bristol Palin on "Dancing with the Stars" wins it all, viewers have decided that underdog status is the most important and that the best dancing doesn't matter. This is not the first time that the best dancer has not won the competition, but this season the discrepancy is crystal clear.

Is the anger at Bristol Palin? Not necessarily. The anger is from having to accept the fact that "Dancing with the Stars" is often more about popularity than dancing. The anger is at a show that could trick an unsuspecting first time "Dancing with the Stars" viewer who is not familiar with the show or its history.

But now if viewers watch season 12, knowing what happened during season 11, they have no one to blame but themselves if they get angry again.

While I agree that she is as close to a non-celebrity as they'll ever get, its not like she just waltzed off the street as an unkown. She's been pimped out as a "teen pregnancy" speaker ($10k to hear about her mistakes?) for a little while now...not exactly any different from Rick Fox's experience.

Bristol showed very little improvement until the past week or two. In all realistic situations, she would have been voted off in the early weeks and should have. As for hard work, if I was dancing several hours a day, four or five days a week, I'd be losing weight. I can't help but question whether or not Bristol is really practicing considering the weight gain.

She can also continue to deny the Tea party helped her but anyone who has watched knows the truth. Yes, there are a great majority of people who dislike her mother but you can't vote against one person, only for them. Her whining about the judges and the media while on Alaskan radio gave me more insight into Bristol. It wasn't pretty and it sounds just like $arah, which is NOT a compliment.

One good thing to think about is that I can't for the life of me remember who won DWTS and the years they won. In the grand scheme of things, especially Presidential elections, a win for Bristol means absolut

If she wins, I am afraid I will be done with that show... I hope Kyle wins too because like Bristol he has also shown a great deal of improvement... and he can actually dance. I like Jennifer too, but all of the whining about her body, then dancing flawlessly is starting to grate on me.

I thik maybe Bristol Pali may be the Sanjaih Malachaih of Dancing with the Stars

It all depends on your definition of a "star". In the past some of the contestants I had never heard of until they were on DWTS. At least, Bristol Palin is known by everyone whether you love or hate her.

Bristol Palin in not a "Star"...the name of the show is dancin with the Stars"...it is all a shame that the producers brought this controversy upn themselves

If it is really suppose to be about the person who has the best dance talent, why did Brandy say on GMA that she hoped Kyle won? From day one Jennifer has been dubbed the "chosen one" and Brandy even said she had to find a way to beat Jennifer if she got to the finals.
