Bristol Palin Says She was Never Given the "Birds and Bees" Talk by Her Mother

Mary Thatcher
Just like her mother Sarah Palin, Bristol Palin is a celebrity in her own right, but for entirely different reasons: she is famous for becoming a teen mother while Sarah was campaigning for VP on the GOP ticket during the recent presidential election. The latest news about Bristol is that she claims her mother never spoke to her about the "birds and the bees" during her teen years. Something is wrong here, though. If Bristol never received any information from her parents about sex, and keep in mind that she is the eldest of five children in the Palin family, where would she have gotten the information to have sex with Levi Johnston, with whom she had a baby boy? She was 17 when she became pregnant, and was in high school when she was thrust into the spotlight along with her mother. Bristol spoke to Harper's Bazaar and also did a photo shoot for them. The June issue is now on newsstands and takes a candid look into Bristol's life as an unwed, single teen mother.

While Bristol may be another teen mother statistic, what separates her from so many other teen mothers is the fact that she comes from a moneyed background. The photo shoot alone shows her wearing Carolina Herrera clothes (not something your average unwed teen mother would be wearing while living in suburban America). Then there is another photo of her wearing a $4,385.00 Lanvin gown while she feeds little Tripp in his high chair. Unrealistic? To be sure, then there is the $14,000.00 Isaac Mizrahi dress she wears while posing on a patio overlooking the ocean. I don't know of any adults who can afford a $14,000.00 dress, let alone a teen mother. So is this sending teen mothers the wrong message? I think it is. Of course, the photo shoot also includes an advertising spot for the Candie's foundation with her holding Tripp and saying. "I never thought I would be a statistic." At least the advertisement is more realistic, as when Bristol once said she wished she had waited ten years more to experiment with sex.

The story in Harper's Bazaar about Bristol does dig into the reality of her life: Bristol admits that she has to take care of her baby's needs first thing in the morning, even before her own needs get taken care of, then goes to work at a dermatologist's office. Bristol also longs for a life at college with her friends, maybe a weekend get together on the town but of course, that is not possible. Bristol recently bought a condo where she lives alone with her son. Most telling, though, is Bristol's feelings towards Levi Johnston, the father of Tripp. It sounds as if the best word she could use to describe him is "slime" and that she has no intentions of getting back with him. As young as Bristol is, she is smart enough to look after Tripp before rushing into any more relationships with men, lest she wind up pregnant once again with a guy who is not exactly responsible father material. Curiously enough, Bristol says she knew all about sex education, but if she did, why did she wind up having sex with a guy who she knew would not remain with her? The age of 17 is much too young to be having sex, even if she did have access to knowing how to have sex (although that is a given: pregnancy does not come about as the result of not knowing what causes it). Bristol does admit one thing, that she will be a hockey mother, just like her own mother Sarah Palin.

Good reporting. I think they shoudl have made Sarah Palin president, and then there would be no more complaints about Obama...

You have to wonder if getting the talk from her mom would have really done anything. It's still her actions and choices to make in life.
