Britain's Got Talent: Susan Boyle Stuns the Crowd

Susan Boyle Sings "I Dreamed a Dream"

Tyler Emerson
How often do we abide by the old cliché "never judge a book by its cover"? How often do children experience bullying due to appearance? How does society define and portray the image of beauty? Well, oftentimes the self-esteem and self-image of many are damaged due to the negative responses of others. Those responses can come through hurtful words, negative comments, unwelcoming facial expressions, and hushed giggles. As we transition through a society that defines a "full-package" as consisting of beauty (according to perspective), thin or muscular body frame, and some form of celebrity, it is challenging for those who may have a true talent and sincere personality traits to emerge within the spotlight. For example, standing outside of the glitz and glamour for forty-seven years was Susan Boyle. Yet, once she graced the stage of the Britain's Got Talent television show (often referred to as the British version of American Idol or America's Got Talent), her singing ability and poise was able to be recognized. Therefore, since her shining moment of beautifully singing a song titled, "I Dreamed a Dream", reportedly from the major musical, "Les Miserables", she has gained immense attention. The song had a flare of sadness with a theme of dreams that were unfulfilled. Yet, Susan Boyle's experience since performing this ballad has shown a great contrast with the words of the song.

Susan Boyle's motivation to enter onto a stage, stand before a crowd where some made condescending verbal and facial gestures, and still performing without one raw note was seemingly amazing for the world to witness. As a result, she is now invited by television news shows who want to showcase a glimpse of her talent and learn more about the woman who surprised the judges on Britain's Got Talent. Even more so, she has been the face of many viral videos on sites such as www.youtube.com. Reportedly, these videos have been clicked by well over 20 million viewers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lp0IWv8QZY&feature=related) who have an interest in Susan Boyle and the reactions of the judges on Britain's Got Talent. What an amazing way to step into an overnight stardom.

What are many persons defining as the moral of the story? Well, to stop the habit of judging a book by its cover and allowing the uniqueness of the individual to speak volumes. It is important to step away from perpetuating the media portrayal of beauty and individual value and to recognize the value, strength, and talent that lies within all individuals.

Thank you for writing this, Velaha! You said it so well - unfortunately, when we're polished we are treated better than when we are not, and that includes how we dress, speak and what emotional state we're in. This article brings to mind a couple of scriptures:

1My brothers, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don't show favoritism. 2Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in shabby clothes also comes in. 3If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, "Here's a good seat for you," but say to the poor man, "You stand there" or "Sit on the floor by my feet," 4have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?
5Listen, my dear brothers: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him? 6But you have insulted the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they no
