British Airways Have Standards to Keep, on Their Flights

Susan Slade
I have been flying with British Airways, in the states, since 1989. My early flights had a stop over, but for the past 16 years I have been able to get a direct flight from Tampa Bay, Florida, to Gatwick, England.

I have to say that a few times, Len and I have gone with other carriers to try to save a little money, but we have really missed out on quality. We also had to change planes, and a couple of times actually missed our connecting flights.

The cost of my flight from Tampa Bay to Gatwick, runs between $1,200 and $1,500, because I go in the summer school holidays, to see my grandchildren. I could get a cheaper flight but then I would have to pay for all the extras, than come with a British Airways flight.

Up until last year I was allowed 2 stowed bags, a carry on, and a laptop, or handbag. This was changed just after my August flight last year, so now I am only allowed one checked bag, for free.

All meals, drinks, which include wine, spirits, beer, etc., are included in the cost of the flight. Also the headphones for the individual television screen are free.

British Airways are not perfect, as we all know, and over the years I have had an overnight stay in Tampa Bay, when Len and I were traveling with another couple, and their daughter left us at the airport. The plane from England had a door not shut properly so they had to go back. We flew out the following morning, so lost a day in England.

Another time, when I was going back for my mother's funeral, they had mechanical problems, which delayed the plane for 5 hours.

The year we had the 'Red critical alert', and I could only take a Ziploc bag on the plane with me, my baggage went missing. Yes, cameras, a gold pocket watch for my Dad, and all the gifts for my family. I only had the clothes I was standing it. British Airways immediately let me spend money on items I needed. Then 3 days later, I could spend more money. I got a check from them that more than covered my losses.

So you see things do happen with every carrier.

What I think British Airways do best are, their employees are always smart, are there for you. Nothing is too much trouble for them. They go out of their way to help you.

They offer good quality meals, and even if you are near the end, and don't get a choice, it will always be good.

They have plenty of movies for you to watch. I see 3 going over, and 3 coming back.

I have flown economy, and Club class, as they don't have first class on the Tampa run. It makes no difference as to what section you fly, you will be treated right.

I have been asked to change seats, as I travel on my own, to allow families to sit together. When this happens British Airways also give me an aisle seat, with extra legroom.

The ground crew are helpful in Tampa, and Gatwick. The flights apart from the ones above, have left on time, and normally arrive slightly early.

Yes, I have had luggage not arrive back with me in Tampa, but it was delivered to my house, 30 miles away, the following day.

British Airways are not cheap, but you get what you pay for.

Yesterday I logged on to their website to update my Passport information, etc., and it stated that I could book my seats. Before I have always done this 24 hours prior to my flight, and got a great seat, with extra legroom.

When I clicked on this link, it states that it costs $30 each way to book early. I am so disappointed with British Airways. Now I won't be able to get one of my favorite seats, as they will all be gone.

British Airways had better not start penny pinching us, because even though I am loyal, I will not put up with extra costs from them.

The few times I have flown British Airways I've been pleased. I hope they keep up the good work.

I've only been on a plane once in my life and that was just from Florida to Maryland.

I agree that BA is a good airline. I do not use them these days though, as they are quite expensive.

    A great airline, but expensive.
