British Museum Soon to Be Largest Museum in the World

London is the home to many famous sites. Among the many sites of London are some very popular museums. Many of these museums are among the best in the world. By far one of the best museums in both London and even the entire world is the British Museum.

The British Museum is located on Great Russel Street in London England. The British Museum is free for everyone. A recent donation will expand the British Museum to be largest museum in the world. While it may not be the best it will be the largest for sure.

The British Museum is over 250 years old. The Department of Ancient Egypt and Sudan houses some very important artifacts such as the Rosetta Stone. There are many large statues and sculptures from Egypt and Sudan in the collection.

The Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities has many items from many famous Greek and Roman locations. There are items from the Arkropolis and the Mausoleum of Halikarnasos. The Department of the Middle East has the largest collection of Mesopotamian antiquities outside of Iraq. There two large human headed winged bulls that many people will recognize and have twins in the Louvre.

The Department of Prints and Drawings is not equal to other major art museums. This part of the British Museum is one of the largest prints and drawing collections though but with no paintings. This might be one of the best collections of its kind but it belongs in an art museum.

The Department of Asia has the largest collection of Indian antiquities in the world. It also has the largest collection of pre-20th century of Japanese art. Having collections that are larger and better then anything in their home country shows how powerful the British Empire once was.

The Department of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas is another weak point as they have to put four different continents grouped together to make this one department. There are also departments of coins and prehistory.

The British Museum is a large and overwhelming museum. However if you plan ahead and make sure to plan what you want to see ahead of time it makes it easier to handle.
