The federation, which currently gathers 50,000 composers and editors, announced that it will license 10 million songs to be used in the English version of the YouTube Web site. Both, the federation and YouTube have refused to make public the terms that specify the financial aspects of the agreement, but people familiar with this domain suggest that this contract could have the value of over $10 million.
The partnership will allow Google to show on the YouTube Web site, videos that belong to artists like Cliff Richard, and Amy Winehouse. This will compensate the decline of the music CD market. This agreement, represents a shield for YouTube, many companies considering the Web site a place where piracy is enjoying freedom at its best.
NBC, and other TV channels, allow that some clips from different TV shows be shown on YouTube, but others maintain a completely cold relationship with YouTube, because of the financial problems it has been causing for years, by offering for free, what would normally be available only in exchange for a fee.
Andrew Shaw, managing director at the On line BroadCast federation, mentioned that YouTube was in an abnormal position when looking at the other media partners, because the information it was delivering could never be checked, basically the YouTube users were able, and still are allowed too upload any material they wish, the material is not being checked before it becomes available to the other YouTube users. Because of this, YouTube owners are not completely blamed for the copyright laws some videos are breaking, and the web site is still operational after all this time.
YouTube has had problem after problem, since it was first launched, because of this, many media companies were against the web site, still it managed to survive the copyright lawsuits over the years, and since it was took over by the giant called Google, it is in a constant growth.
YouTube users are increasing, and are loving the web site, because it allow them to share what they want, when they want. Also the web site is constantly searched to watch videos and movies that are not available for free. It is a place of freedom, in a media that will take money for almost anything.
