Britney Spears Makes a Comeback on Mainstream Magazine Covers

The Pop Star's Elle Magazine Cover is a Big Change from Her Tabloid Magazine Cover Past

Pop star Britney Spears is featured on one of two January 2010 Elle Magazine covers, which hit newsstands yesterday. It wasn't too long ago that the 28 year old Spears' main cover gigs were paparazzi shots in tabloid magazines. But 2009 seemed to be a comeback year for the pop star. She started out the year on the cover of Glamour magazine back in January, looking pretty and healthy, on the heels of a fresh-faced Rolling Stone cover story last December.

Spears, who is currently in a relationship with her agent boyfriend Jason Trawick, has received mostly positive press throughout this year, with just enough controversy to keep herself in the news (the lyrics and video to her song 3 have created some recent buzz).

Spears poses with her sons Sean Preston and Jayden James on one version of Elle's January 2010 cover (the second January cover features singer Lady Gaga). Inside the magazine is a photo spread, an update on Spears, her hit album Circus and herworld tour (although there is no interview with the singer . There is, however, an unusual photo of the singer wearing a blue marabou feather trim coat that makes her look like a bit like Cookie Monster. Elle's creative director Joe Zee, who also appears on the MTV show The City, styled Spears for the photo shoot.

It's a far cry from past magazine covers like OK! that featured stories like the "Britney in Crisis", People magazine's January 2008 cover story, "Britney's Mental Illness" or my personal favorites, US Magazine covers of Spear's kids with the headlines "Help!" and "Mommy's Crying!". Even Rolling Stone featured an article lamenting Spear's demise in a February 2008 cover story called "The Tragedy of Britney Spears", complete with the tagline "She was a pop princess. Now she's in and out of hospitals, rehab and court. How Britney lost it all".

The Elle cover story is titled "Britney Spears Has Done It Again" and goes on with the line, "The pop superstar still owns the charts and continues to captivate us."

Quite a turn of events for a pop princess that many people had all but written off.
