Broadening the Minds of Southern Conservatives

Looking Past Gay Marriage and Abortion

Michelle K. Miller
Southern conservatives can't seem to break loose of their old-fashioned ideas and look past the only two issues that matter to them in a candidate: gay marriage and abortion. While the allowance of these things may be a problem and a valid reason to not vote for a candidate for some people, there are more problems in this country that need recognition. It's time to open up Southern Conservatives' eyes help them realize that the way to solve problems isn't to keep creating religious issues in politics.

The truth is that there is a war going on, and it has been going on for over five years. No matter if you agree with it or disagree with it, it's one of the many reasons why America is in debt and the economy is being drained. On top of that, we have lost many soldiers overseas. For some Southern Conservatives, who embrace defending our country through war (since that's how their granddaddies did it), that might hit hard little, because they may have lost someone overseas. Losing men and women left and right is a good reason to stop war. That and America is getting so far in debt, I fear that we're not going to afford anything soon.

As if that wasn't bad enough, there are millions of people, especially children, who are without health care because it is unaffordable. There are candidates who are not Republican, who are willing to do something about that. Some of them aren't even about Universal Health Care, but just want to make health care accessible and affordable. For some Southern Conservatives, that should be good news, because a lot of them live in poor southern states, and there aren't enough jobs that earn enough money for health care.

Also, today's youth is wasting away, because they'd rather turn to dead end jobs, then attend college to further themselves. Why? College is too expensive. And not just college is being left behind, but because these teens have nothing to aspire to, a lot of them are dropping out or failing out of high school, and a lot of teachers are losing hope and trying less in the classroom to save them. That's truly sad. However, there non-Republican candidates there to improve schools and make sure any child who wants to go to college, gets to.

Therefore, instead of just searching for a candidate that is going to oppose gay marriage and all abortions, Southern Conservatives should look at the big picture. They should be searching for someone to provide a better tomorrow. One who will bring our troops home, help get us out of debt, help everyone get proper health care, and a good education, producing better jobs. Even if the candidate isn't Republican, they can produce change.
