Broadway in Bryant Park, 2010

Some ticket prices for Broadway shows are quite expensive, which means that not everyone gets the chance to enjoy the amazing performances. If you've ever watched the Tony awards and wished that you could see the performances in person, now is your chance. Coming up this summer in New York City is Broadway in Bryant Park, where you have a chance to enjoy some big name Broadway shows for a price that everyone can enjoy no matter what their budget- free.

Each show is on a Thursday and lasts an hour, from 12:30p to 1:30p on The Lawn so it is a perfect opportunity to eat your lunch outdoors. There are many places nearby to grab food before you go, but head to the park as early as possible to grab a prime spot. You may be lucky enough to grab one of the picnic tables and chairs, but considering the anticipated crowds, bring a blanket just in case. Each day there will be casts from three to five different Broadway shows; each cast will perform two to three numbers.

On Thursday, July 8th, the casts from STOMP, Promises, Promises, In the Heights and Nunsense will perform. On Thursday, July 15th, the casts from The Phantom of the Opera, Billy Elliot, Memphis, South Pacific and the Radio City Christmas Spectacular will perform. Performing on Thursday July 22nd are the casts from Chicago, A Little Night Music, Falling for Eve and Rock of Ages. Thursday July 29th are performances from the casts of The Lion King, The Addams Family, Wicked and Next to Normal. On Thursday August 5th are performances from Avenue Q, Fela! and Million Dollar Quartet. On the final day of the performance, Thursday, August 12th, the casts from Mamma Mia!, American Idiot, La Cage Aux Folles, West Side Story and Mary Poppins.

If you are unfamiliar with some of the shows, visit 1067litefm.com, which lists the schedule by day and links to a description of each one.

Bryant Park is located between 40th and 42nd Streets & Fifth and Sixth Avenues. The park is in close proximity to Penn Station and Port Authority Bus terminal so it can make for a nice walk if you so choose. You can also take the B, D, V or F trains to 42nd Street/ Bryant Park.
