Broadway Review: "Next Fall"

Elton John's First Play is a Hit

Robin Raven
"Next Fall," the first play produced by singer/songwriter Elton John and his partner David Furnish, premiered on Broadway in early March 2010, and it looks like it will be keeping the Great White Way company for quite some time. It has been hailed by critics and deemed an instant hit by early audiences.

It's a play that has taken advantage of modern marketing, some of it the most effective way of reaching audiences that comes for basically free. You can follow "Next Fall" on its pages on Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. It even has its own YouTube channel. On its official website, NextFallBroadway.com, it even has celebrity video testimonials. A conventionally great play meets cutting edge promotion.

Written by Geoffrey Nauffts and directed by Sheryl Kaller, "Next Fall" tells the story of a gay couple (Luke and Adam). They are deeply in love and in a 5-year relationship. The play looks at their relationship with brutal honesty, affinity and humor. When a horrific accident occurs, everything changes. The supporting cast of characters add a lot to the tale as well. It's dramatic and comedic and deeply touching. As declared by "The New York Times," it's "the funniest heartbreaker in town."

"Next Fall" run for approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes each night, and this includes a 15-minute intermission. "Next Fall" is playing at the Helen Hayes Theatre, 240 West 44th Street (Between Broadway and 8th Avenue), New York, New York, 10036. Ticket prices start at a little over $100, but there is also a student rush available at the box office starting at two hours before each performance. Although these tickets may offer a less-than-stellar view of the play, it's still a great way to see magnificent theater for very little money ($26.50) compared to its regular pricing.
