Brock Lesnar: All Hype or the Real Thing

Terry Sutton
A win-loss record of 1-1 in the UFC does not make Brock Lesnar look very impressive. After all, the former College NCAA Division 1 Wrestling Champion recently lost his highly promoted fight to former UFC heavyweight champion, Frank Mir at "UFC 81 Breaking Point." The fight lasted a minute and a half with Lesnar taking down Mir and pummeling him relentlessly to the face and head. It looked like a real possibility that the fight would be stopped because of the continual pounding of Mir by the 260-pound Lesnar. An accidental punch to the back of the head may have saved Mir from defeat as both men were forced to get back in a neutral fighting position. Shortly afterwards, they hit the ground again and Frank Mir locked in Lesnar's leg for a knee bar. The former World Wrestling Entertainment Champion tapped out after a few seconds and Mir was declared victorious.

Many fans used this loss to dismiss Lesnar as overrated. I was impressed with his power and relentless attack. His takedowns were efficient and even Mir remarked afterwards in several interviews how strong and quick Lesnar was.

Lesnar will have to work on his ground game and learn some Jiu-Jitsu moves. The UFC will most likely have Lesnar fight a few opponents with less experience than Mir. The hope is to build up his record and experience. Hopefully, a fight with Tim Sylvia, another former UFC heavyweight champion will loom on the horizon. A fight between those two would be a headliner battle between two of the biggest men in the sport. Lesnar has worldwide recognition due to his professional wrestling career and has brought new fans to the world of Mixed Martial Arts. All good fighters learn from their defeats early in their careers. UFC Middleweight champion Anderson Silva lost his first ever fight in competition. Now Silva is considered by many to be the best "pound for pound" fighter in the world. The next several fights Lesner competes in will prove if he is all hype or a championship contender. In my opinion he has the power, the hunger and toughness to win it all.
