Broken Beating

Lisa Stanley

With the flash of lightning beyond my window
An image returns to my mind
Haunting me again-
A child afraid of the dark

I look in the mirror
The reflection before me
Remains expressionless

I quiver

The thunder rolls through the Earth
I hear her voice echoing from
Above the clouds, calling
My name softly

I don't know if I should answer
Attempt to breathe another world
Or settle with the security
Of what life is to me now

The war in the sky lights up my room
Shattering the windows glass into a
Million pieces, broken
Like the heart that can not be mended
When life has gone

And I see her face in the
Mirror's reflection
Looking back at me, crying

The storm is over, the sun
Shines through the window
Once again

But the broken beating
Of my heart
Still bitterly remains
