Broken Heart to Beautiful Art

The Journey from a Disfigured Tattoo to Beautiful Artwork

Skyler Raine
My story began when I made the decision to remove a poorly thought out tattoo which I had gotten in my late teen years. It was my decision - my fault; and I felt that if I wanted to remove it from my body, the best way would be to save up for countless months in order to afford tattoo laser removal.

After searching the web for safe and affordable methods that would not leave scars on my body, I came across a facility called Cosmetic Laser Center, LLC. (later changing to Florida Medi Spa) After locking myself into an "upfront" payment plan (which in the end would be cheaper than paying per session) I was out over $3,000 but guaranteed unlimited treatments until the tattoo was completely removed.

The process was incredibly painful. After many sessions and only half of my tattoo removed, the business disappears. I was not informed of this until I called to schedule an appointment and was told that the business was gone.

In the end I was basically left with scar tissue (which I was originally assured would not happen), and a half removed tattoo that remained blotchy and with oddly pigmented skin coloration. What a life lesson - left in debt and with permanent scars.

After much debating, I decided that instead of paying another 2k +, and then enduring scar removal, I was going to get another tattoo placed over the old remnants (what irony...I know.)

I searched around locally and came across Funhouse Tattoos where I met with a man named John Lothrop (also known as "Tattoo John"). He had been in the tattoo business for over two decades, so I felt pretty confident. I brought in a custom idea which I had thoroughly thought out. The results could not have been more satisfactory. His skills in design and coloration were impeccable. As I sat in the tattoo chair getting the work done, he allowed me the privilege of viewing his art book. I was completely floored at the amazing work he's done. His freehand sketches and ink coloring was outstanding. It was the type of art you'd expect to see in a highly detailed comic book.

John informed me that on top of tattoos, he also has a strong passion for designing art for businesses as well such as murals, custom drawn pictures, among many other concepts.

My experience went so well after such a discouraging journey that this article alone doesn't do justice to his talents. I walked out for the first time in two years feeling confident to wear a shirt with short sleeves.

To anyone living in or near the Orlando, Florida area - I highly recommend Tattoo John if you're planning to get a tattoo, and to all businesses who want beautiful one-of-a-kind artwork.
