Sayonara Andrew Garcia and Katie Stevens!

Rounding out Elvis week on American Idol, former contestant Brooke White performed a duet with Justin Gaston singing "If I Can Dream" on the results show Wednesday night. Brooke White made the top five on the 7th season of American Idol and was viewed as top-two material by many. Many of Brooke White's admirers were pleased when White went into the studio to record and release an album in spite of being voted off American Idol. Brooke White's first single, "Hold Up My Heart" made its debut at #47 on Billboard's Top 100 - not too shabby for a fifth place American Idol contestant. Former contestant Adam Lambert also performed "Whataya Want From Me" complete with smoke and lasers. Being easily distracted by smoke, flames, lasers, or flashing lights, the singing is quickly lost on me with so many distractions, but the audience seemed to like it a lot.

When the American Idol judges chose to use their save last week to keep Mike Lynche in the competition after the audience selected him for elimination; it was known that two contestants would be sent packing this week in a double-elimination. The field has been narrowed to seven with the elimination of Andrew Garcia and Katie Stevens. Many believed that Andrew Garcia was going to be eliminated last week when Mike Lynche learned his fate. With Idol judges using their only save on Lynche, neither Garcia or Stevens were given the opportunity to sing their way back into the competition tonight. Andrew Garcia had been struggling for weeks and his elimination didn't come as a surprise. The same holds true for Katie Stevens, who has struggled over the course of the competition, finding herself in the bottom three on more than one occasion.

As the American Idol field is being thinned down and refined, the competition is growing more intense. The current favorite looks to be contestant Crystal Bowersox. Barring any nightmarish performances or huge errors, it's likely that she'll make the top two. At the other end of the spectrum, it seems likely that Aaron Kelly is playing with borrowed time this season on American Idol. Kelly simply doesn't have what it takes to make it much further and he's likely to be eliminated next week.

Tim Urban received accolades from American Idol judges last night after his Elvis week performance "Can't Help Falling In Love With You" showed a more confident and refined performer emerging. It will be interesting to see how far Urban can make it with his newfound momentum.

Lee DeWyze is still showing signs of potential along with Casey "eye candy" James. Depending on which path Mike Lynche finds himself on next week, the audience will really begin to see where this season is going on American Idol. Siobhan Magnus can sing, although she seems to be struggling with the suggestions made by Simon and Kara. There's no question that self-doubt will help her down the path to elimination if she can't trust herself.

Next week Alicia Keys is going to mentor the remaining contestants on American Idol with the theme being inspirational songs. It should make for an interesting week.

    Sorry, don't follow this!

I have noticed that the last few shows have had performances with either tons of flashing lights, sparks, or flames-and now lasers. I thought the effect of the smoke moving inside the frame of the lasers was mesmerizing. I was so busy watching the effects that the music got lost. I'm easily distracted, so less is more with me. At this point I think it's tough for any of them to endure the elimination. I have to think that some of them see it coming, but it would still be difficult. They are young and have been having this surreal experience of being in the spotlight and it's hard enough without the huge amount of criticism that comes with it. I guess they have to learn that if they want to be in the business, they have to develop thick skins.

I agree that the smoke and lasers made it hard to see Lambert at times. I'm so touched by American Idol's efforts to give back and help those in need. The Elvis theme has been fun to watch. I wasn't surprised by the contestants eliminated but felt sorry for Katie.
