Brooke White's Performance on American Idol 4/29/2008

Is She Hanging on by a Thin Thread?

"So sorry Brooke, but I'm NOT a believer! I was, but have been changing my mind as every week there seems to be less and less of you."

That would be my Dear John letter for the all American songstress, Brooke White. Singing "I'm a believer" and "I am Myself" this week during Neil Diamond week, it was a little let down and then some hope that shined through. The question is: Can she keep it up?

Her first performance tonight was definitely not Brooke at her best. It wasn't as exciting as the song was written to be and she on the guitar wasn't cutting into the meaning of the song. It was an okay song choice, but would have been absolutely amazing had she changed it up and made it her own. When she does that she has an awesome performance every single time. Either that or she needed to adapt herself more to the song and then she would have done much better. Another way she could have improved would have been by raising the key of the song to something higher. When Brooke sings low notes it doesn't seem to fit her personality and isn't very interesting to listen to.

But, don't let go of her so fast America. "I am Myself" was a very difficult song and yet she performed and played it beautifully. Her voice was back to what we're used to and she was just lovely on the piano. When she plays the piano her performances are great because she is so vulnerable. It doesn't always make for a good performance because her vulnerability can stir up her nerves and make it hard for her to sing at her best. Luckily that was not the case tonight! She let go and from the start was herself and it was obvious she had fun. The only change that could have made this performance better was making the song either a little longer or end on a different section. It just felt as if the song ended short of what it should have.

As for competition, David Archuleta is her greatest competition by far. If she can get ahead of him in rankings, chances are she may make it to the final three. Beyond that, it is most likely just dreaming on anyone's part as Mercado and Cook are out of her league.
