Brooklyn Heights Dog Rules at the Park

Sorry boy dogs, Brooklyn Bridge Park says no to bitches in heat.

Recent changes in park rules indicate that if a female dog should be in heat, which happens twice a year, she could be kicked out of the park. It's known as the "No dogs in heat rule." Plenty of other parks have the rule on stand-by but rarely enforce it. That's about to change at Pier 6 at Atlantic Avenue's foot.

While many dog owners think the rule is on the harsh side, others support it without question. Everyone knows that a dog in heat will attract other dogs and start lots of canine fights. This is something the park wants to avoid.

Dogs will travel from great distances if they hear a female dog howl her heated call. They'll come running even faster if they can pick up on the scent.

Many local dog owners question the park's ability to actually enforce the new rule. Will officials pick up on a particular dog that is urinating more frequently, is spotting, or has the doggy desirable heat pheromone coming off her? Chances are, probably not.
