Brooklyn residents share skills and talents for day of free, fun education
Classes include ice cream making, bike maintenance and bookbinding

On Saturday, Oct. 9, the Skillshare will offer 25 classes over five hours for no fee. There is also no registration and the event is completely open to the public. Classes are on a first-come, first-serve basis and people may participate in any class they choose with no limit. However, there are a lot of classes to choose from in each one-hour block, which means the difficult part is deciding what to learn.
Here is an example of what a perfect day of fun education could be: Start things off by learning the basics of screenprinting and create your own two-color reusable bag. After taking the class on canning fruits and vegetables, this bag will come in handy for picking up produce at the farmer's market. Instead of tossing used glass jars and bottles, bring them to the glass-etching workshop and make beautiful reusable art. Once you take Kombucha 101, fill up those glass jars and bottles! End the day either learning how to make fabric dyes from grocery bags, vegetables, flowers and spices or maybe create a bound book to jot down lessons learned or perhaps indulge yourself with homemade ice cream. The possibilities are many on this wonderfully educational day.
The Skillshare is encouraging $10 donations to help pay for course supplies, but no one needs to give in order to take a class (though, it's a nice way to show support, even if you can't make it.) As of Sept. 21, the Skillshare was only $645 away from its fundraising goal of $1,500. To help reach and even exceed this goal, please visit Brooklyn Skillshare's Kickstarter page. The Skillshare will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Brooklyn Community Arts & Media High School in Bed-Stuy.
