Brown County, Indiana State Park

Gorgeous Fall Foliage in the Hills of Brown County, Indiana

Janice Meyer
I make my home in Rochester, Indiana, about one hundred miles to the north of Indianapolis. Brown County lies forty miles southwest of Indianapolis. Brown County is famous for its beautiful fall foliage, and many people from Indiana and around our country travel to see this wondrous spectacle. There are leaves in a plethora of colors; they are in all conceivable shades of red, brown, yellow, orange and yes, even some green.

Brown County State Park, the largest park in Indiana, lies just off highway 46. This is where hundreds of tourists come in mid-to-late September and on through October. The Park boasts many sources of entertainment, relaxation and beauty, including: horse-back riding trails, hiking trails and housekeeping cabins in both rustic and modern styles for families. There is also a camping-supply store, an area for picnicking, a swimming pool and more. A variety of camping sites are also available.

There are several scenic drives within Brown County State Park, where you can drive through and leisurely enjoy the lovely fall foliage.

The housekeeping cabins are especially popular, so be sure to reserve early. These cabins have beautiful views of the colorful fall foliage from porches and decks. You can phone, or come to the park if not too far for you, so you can get a look at the cabins. You can also go to: http://www.browncountylogcabinrentals.com/home.php, where photos are available.

The Abe Martin Lodge can also be found in Brown County State Park. It is named for the noted cartoon character who graced the Indianapolis newspaper in the early 1930's. You can also go to the web site: http://www.browncountystatepark.com/abemartin.html. There are also some alluring log cabins tucked away in the woods. The Brown County Wedding Gazebo can always be prepared for your wedding. For more information, go to: http://www.cabinridgecabins.com.

Nashville, Indiana is close by Brown County State Park, and is also the county seat of Brown County. Nashville, Indiana is also known as 'Little Nashville,' and they often have country musicians from the Nashville, Tennessee Grand Ole Opry appearing at there own Little Nashville, Indiana Opry Theater.

Nashville, Indiana has almost every kind of shop imaginable where you can browse and shop. There is an art gallery where you will find original art and other treasures. The Artist's Colony Inn, which is right in the heart of Nashville, is a wonderful place to stay. The beds are comfortable, the food is excellent, and the rooms are complete with amenities such as lotions, blow-dryers, extra blankets and almost any small item one might need. We were in Nashville, Indiana a few years back, when we bought some artwork. 'The Starving Artists" group were at the art gallery having a big sale of artwork. I'm sure the town has grown since then, and now has more attractions to see and enjoy. The town boasts many fine restaurants and almost any entertainment one could desire. At that time, we spent the night in a luxurious motel.

Brown County Indiana is a great place to spend a day and one night, or a week or more.
