Since I love daylilies, a trip to a garden full of daylilies is my cup of tea. This month a friend and I went to Browns Ferry Daylily Gardens in Georgetown, South Carolina. They treat their customers to an Open House complete with free lunch consisting of small sandwiches and lots of desserts. The kitchen is open all day, air conditioned and the bathroom is clean. What more can you ask for? Except for lots of daylilies to look over and purchase at 20% off for this special weekend.

There is a family home on the property and in wandering just inside the stone fence you will find more wonderful plants and yard art. Small Frog statues great you with a smile as does a statue of a girl on a swing holding of course some flowers. There are special 'guards' that have free reign in the daylily gardens. There are two beautiful dogs that go by the names of Gunner and Shorty plus two gorgeous cats Daisy and Rose. You can see photos of them at their website. Gunner and Shorty are always hanging around the small cafeteria for handouts; even the kitties will come sniffing to see if you are bringing them some morsel to taste.

Browns Ferry does not disappoint in plant varieties to choose from with more than 1,200 plants a 3 acre garden it is a day full of browsing. Some of the new hybrid plants can be costly but most are priced to fit everyone's pocketbook. My friend and I came away with a new variety or two for our gardens. During the Browns Ferry Daylily Gardens Open House held each summer many of the plants are 20% off the regular price. This is also true for their online website in case you are not able to visit the daylily gardens in person.

Charles Douglas is the owner of this family run business which includes his wife Heidi, Gene Tanner, Amy McDaniel and Charlotte Cribb. The daylily gets its name from its bloom trait of each bloom only being open for one day. You need not be concerned that there may not be enough blooms on your daylilies as there are many buds on each stem or 'scape'.

Charles Douglas, his family and staff are delightful people and most willing to help you choose daylilies that would be good in your gardens. It is an education to converse with the family and employees as they are most knowledgeable in growing daylilies and will answer any question you ask. Browns Ferry Daylily Gardens is like one big family that includes their employees and each customer that comes to the daylily gardens.
