Brushing Your Teeth the Natural Way

Gwendolyn Taylor
Most people are grabbing the name brand toothpastes just to make their teeth "whiter" or to make their breath fresher, but most do not take in consideration of the harmful ingredients that the common toothpastes contain. Others are aware, but don't want to spend double the amount of regular name brand toothpastes. I would argue that your health is extremely important, so to spend the extra dollars on healthier toothpastes would be worth it. However, more health food stores are coming out with their version of all natural toothpastes and their prices are just the same or even less than the average toothpastes brands sell for. This is making it more convenient for consumers who are becoming more health conscious, but do not have the means to be lavishly spending money on all natural products.

Trader Joe's, a very well known health food store up there with the popularity of Whole Foods, has come out with their own version of all natural toothpastes. Their best one is their Antiplaque Toothpaste. It does not contain any Lauryl Sulfates (has been known to cause cancer), saccharin (also known to cause cancer), or Propylene Glycol. It also does not contain Fluoride, which has known to be harmful to your health if consumed in large amounts. Instead it incorporates all natural alternatives such as Fennel, Propolis, and Myrrh, which are herbal resins used to provide you with a fresh, clean breath. Xylitol is used in place to prevent plaque buildup on your teeth. Since the ingredients in this toothpaste are all natural, they are softer and gentler on your tooth enamel.

Other well known natural brands such as Tom's of Maine also offer natural alternative toothpastes, but their prices, like most all natural products, can be somewhat frightening. If price is an issue, try one of Trader Joe's toothpastes with a regular 6 ounce tube costing you only a $1.99. Trader Joe's stores are located nationwide. After using this toothpaste, I see no other reason to go back to the usual name brand toothpastes. This provides my mouth and teeth with a good clean feeling and it makes me more at ease knowing that I am not putting random, unknown, and chemical and ingredients into my body. The saying goes that "you are what you eat" and I would definitely say that the toothpaste you brush your teeth with could very well fall into that category.
