Brutal Legend Pumps Up the Volume with Downloadable Content

The rock and roll mayhem of Electronic Arts' "Brutal Legend" expands with the release of the first downloadable content Nov. 3, 2009.

"Brutal Legend: Tears of the Hextadon" will add two new multiplayer maps to the heavy metal, third-person action game that was released Oct. 13 featuring the likes of Jack Black, Ozzy Osbourne and Lemmy.

The first map, "Circle of Tears," features a forsaken land battlefield carved from vile waters in which players must circle around their opponents to destroy them. The second map, "Death's Fjord," has players on an icy mountain pass above a dense cluster of fans which they must harvest without aid of cover from enemy fire.

As an added bonus, anyone who downloads "Tears of the Hextadon" will receive a free axe, known as the Blade of Ormagoden. The "Brutal Legend" map download will be available beginning Nov. 3 through Xbox Live for 400 MS points and through PlayStation Network beginning Nov. 5. The download through PlayStation Network will be free until Nov. 19 and will cost $4.99 thereafter.

Tim Schaffer, president of Double Fine Productions Inc., which partnered with Electronic Arts on "Brutal Legend," said the title of the map expansion pack came from the tears of his enemies on the battlefield, while the "Death's Fjord" map name came from his Nordic ancestry and because he liked the name.

"Brutal Legend" received a 10 out of 10 rating from PLAY magazine and a nine out of 10 from IGN. It is available on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation systems. It was released by Electronic Arts and Double Fine Productions after Activision passed on the project. IGN also said it was one of the best video games of the year.

In the game, Jack Black stars as a roadie sent to an alternate universe where he must fight off enemies using a variety of rock instruments, gaining allies and increasing his fan base. Part of the combat involves Stage Battles, in which the player and an enemy use their fans to try to destroy the other's stage. Attracting fans is done by building merchandise booths. Outside of the stage battles, there is an entire world to explore, secrets to unlock and secondary missions to complete. Other rock stars also voice characters, including Rob Halford from Judas Priest and Lita Ford.

It is rated M for mature and sells for $59.99.
