If you don't have a bubbler you can use a filter system if the tank is small. Filter systems will produce oxygen bubbles in the tank as well but they wont produce a lot of oxygen like you might think that they will. If you have a large tank you will need to purchase a bubbler. You will need to purchase an air pump, air line tubing and the air stone. Avoid bubblers which are smooth because they will get clogged up over time. It's hard to get these bubblers clean and I would always suggest the traditional air stone and not bendable bubbler wands.
Not only is a bubbler used to produce oxygen but it's also used to create more of a water flow. If you have a lot of debris at the bottom of your tank the bubbler will help to lift the debris off of your rock. The bubbler will also keep the water moving around in your fish tank. You can place the bubbler under the rock to keep the rock clean in that particular area. It will push all of the uneaten food up towards the surface where the filter will then be able to suck up the uneaten food out of the water.
Another thing that bubblers are used for is protein skimmers. These are used for saltwater fish tanks. A protein skimmer will remove all of the harmful chemicals in your water such as chlorine and other harmful elements. You will need an air pump with two intake tubes that can connect to the air pump. You will place one air line tube into the protein skimmer and the other will hook up to a wooden diffuser and be placed inside of your fish tank. A bubbler is the most important part of the protein skimmer. Without a bubbler, the protein skimmer would not be able to function.
