Buckskin Joe Frontier Town and Railway in Cañon City, Colorado

Return to the Old West

If you want to see the Royal Gorge, the world's highest suspension bridge, in CaƱon City, Colorado, in a whole new way and see some entertainment too, you might want to visit Buckskin Joe Frontier Town and Railway. Millions of people have visited since 1958 and seen where major motion pictures have been made and been reminded of the time when travel was a lot slower, but people were a lot faster to use their guns. You can see gunfights at the Frontier Town. The little train at the Frontier Town takes people on a 30 minute ride that gives a panoramic view of the Gorge below the Royal Gorge. At Point Alta Vista one look will leave you in amazement at the amount of work it took to finish this bridge.

Many believe the Arkansas River pounded and churned rocks until it formed the Royal Gorge Canyon, which is below the bridge. The bridge was built in six months. There were no serious injuries during its building. The little train provides quite a view of the canyon and the bridge.

The Royal Gorge Canyon is one-quarter mile wide at its top and is split by the Arkansas River. It is 50 feet wide at its base. The canyon is 1,200 deep in spots, so the view from the top of the Royal Gorge Bridge is majestic.

Visitors to Buckskin Joe and Frontier Town get to see entertainment that has won awards and receive old fashioned hospitality. Visitors might feel like they have stepped back in time as they see realistic gunfights. The buildings will remind them of the Old West too. Buckskin Joe and Frontier Town becomes the Town of Terror in October.

The gunfights, which break out several times during the day at Buckskin Joe and Frontier Town are so realistic you may find your self ducking or running for cover. There are also comedy shows, serious shows, and the "Hanging," the only show of its kind, and it ends with the live hanging of the bad guy.

It's no wonder such stars as John Wayne, Tom Selleck, Goldie Hawn, and Sam Elliot have been in movies that were made in Buckskin Joe and Frontier Town. Television shows were filmed at the tourist attraction too. Cat Ballou, Brothers O'Toole, The Cowboys, Mr. Majestyk and The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox were made at the Frontier Town.

Las Vegas magician Christian Augustine also performs. The shows are perfect for everyone from grandchildren to grandparents.

There aren't many places you can eat a genuine Buffalo Burger, but you can at Buckskin Joe and Frontier Town. They really are Buffalo Burgers; they aren't just big hamburgers. That is just one of the many items on the menu. Another popular item is the Purgatory Green Chili smothered burger.

If you want a little more excitement, you can even be a Gunfighter for a Day at Buckskin Joe and Frontier Town. You will be trained. You will be placed in front of gunfights throughout the day. You will be performing for the public.

In the gift shop you can buy from one of the largest such shops in the area. Homemade fudge is available. Samples are available.

There are special events at Buckskin Joe and Frontier Town, such as the Halloween oriented Town of Terror in October and old fashioned games, such as watermelon seed spitting contests and boot tosses on July 4.

Many people who have visited and made comments online have said the train ride was fun. They have also said the view of the Gorge from the train is amazing. While not everyone liked the shows, many said they loved them, and their children did too. They have said they will return. Others have commented that Buckskin Foe and Frontier Town is a great place for children.

    Hey all,

For what it is worth, my family and I went there and had a blast. One reason we choose this place is because they were pet friendly and that is the truth. Our dog Bongo went with us everywhere and even on the train. I have 2 kids and they thought this was the neatest thing we did on vacation. They still talk about it and we went in early June. They still run around playing the gun fights and it was just a very great day for my family. I would give it 2 thumbs up and definitely recommend it to anyone with kids and pets.
