Buddy's Pizza: One of Michigan's Finest Pizzerias

Buddy's Pizza has received numerous acknowledgments for their great-tasting, signature deep dish pizza. In 2003, The Food Network rewarded the pizzeria with a spot in its list of the "Nation's Five Best Pizza Places." As a former employee and as a regular customer for many years, I can confirm that Buddy's Pizza offers an array of delicious menu items.

As a pizza connoisseur of sorts, I have eaten many varieties of pizza. A rival to Buddy's signature deep dish that comes to mind is Geno's East in downtown Chicago. I've eaten Geno's Chicago-style deep dish pizza on several occasions. Now, don't get me wrong, Geno's East offers a spectacular pizza, but Buddy's Pizza still wins, hands-down.

Why is Buddy's Pizza the best? This Sicilian-style deep dish pizza has a warm, robust flavor that sends taste buds begging for more. It's not too spicy and not too saucy. The crust offers a light crunch and is chewy, but not tough. The cheese on this pizza has lots of flavor and isn't gummy like some other pizza cheeses. This deep dish pizza is good enough to eat without toppings added, but if you do order toppings, you'll find them hidden underneath the cheese. I usually order my pizza topped with pineapples. Buddy's is a little different with their pineapple topping; instead of throwing on pieces of the fruit, they place a pineapple ring on each slice.

Buddy's deep dish pizza isn't the only good thing on the menu. I recommend also trying their Antipasto salad and their Oven-Baked Cheese & Bacon Fries. The Antipasto salad isn't like some other restaurant salads that are 95 percent lettuce and only 5 percent meat and cheese; Buddy's comes loaded with salami, ham, and Wisconsin cheese. The Oven-Baked Cheese & Bacon Fries from Buddy's Pizza is one serious appetizer, so don't order it if your appetite isn't up to the challenge. But if you do, be prepared to never want plain ole' french fries ever again-yes, it's that delicious! The appetizer comes with two dipping sauces, buttermilk ranch and sour cream, and both are worth trying.

And if the delicious food on the menu isn't enough to entice you to dine at Buddy's Pizza, consider paying a visit to one of their nine restaurants, located in and around Detroit, during their annual "Slice for Life" benefit. This event raises thousands of dollars every year for the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit. So far, Buddy's "Slice for Life" annual benefits have resulted in a total of $1.2 million in donations to help feed those in need. Eating a slice of award-winning deep dish pizza is a mighty tasty way to help a soup kitchen feed the hungry.

Buddy's didn't add their signature deep dish pizza to the menu until 1946, 10 years after the original restaurant in Detroit first opened.

Those oven baked cheese and bacon French fries sound decadent, but tasty nevertheless. :-)
