Paris, the exciting and exuberant capital of France, is home to some of the costliest accommodation in the country, but Paris does offer some good budget places to lay one's head too.
There are some very good hostels in Paris, and only the official youth hostels (auberges de jeuness) require that you have a Hostelling International (HI) card.
Most hostels do not take reservations by telephone, and it is usually a first come, first served situation. So to bag a bed, get there early.
Centre International de Sejour BVJ Paris-Louvre
This hostel run by the Bureau des Voyages de la Jeunesse is a modern 200-bed hostel. They provide bunks in single sex dorms and cater mainly for the 18-35 crowd.
Sheets, pillows and blankets are provided, and breakfast is available. Check in is 2.30 p.m., and checkout is before 10 a.m. Cash only.

Hotel de Lille
The Hotel de Lille is a spotlessly clean, old fashioned hotel offering 13 rooms.
Some rooms just have a bidet and washbasin, whilst others also provide a shower.
For those rooms without a shower, you can pay an extra 3 Euros to use the communal shower.
Down a quiet side street, the prices at this hotel start at 35 Euros.

Auberge de Jeunesse Jules Ferry
This is an official hostel, and has on offer 99 beds housed in 2-6 person dorms.
The rooms at this hostel are all locked between 10.30am until 2pm, but on the good side there is no curfew.
Prices start at 21 Euros, but if you hold an HI card you will get a discount of 2.90 Euros per night.

This outfit has 3 hostels all situated in renovated 17th-18th century mansions.
The prices to stay at each is the same starting at 29 Euros.
There is a curfew from 1am to 7am.
The great thing about this budget accommodation, is the fact that you can call the central switchboard or e-mail them, and they will hold you a bed until noon.
The maximum stay is seven nights.

This budget accommodation is set in a cheery and noisy 20-room hotel.
Should you opt for the cheaper rooms then you will only have a washbasin, but there is no extra cost for using the showers.

This family run budget hotel is great for those wishing to enjoy the nightlife of Marais.
There are 32 rooms, with the cheaper rooms sharing bathrooms.
Should you not like cats this perhaps isn't the place for you, as there are some resident moggies here that like to meet and greet the guests!

Recently renovated the Hotel Jeanne d'Arc is situated just off the St Catherine Square, and is ideal for spending time exploring Marais.

This hostel is popular with the older crowd and is very friendly, with bi-lingual staff.
The rooms are somewhat cramped, and house between two and eight people. But this hostel does have a baggage room.

There is a main lobby with a television, and backgammon, cards, and chess are available.
Internet access on a shared computer is available, at 1 Euro for 30mins, 2 Euros for 60mins and 3 Euros for 2 hrs.

Port Royal Hotel
This clean and quiet hotel has been run by the same family for four generations, spanning 76 years.
Located on a tree lined boulevard, with several caf terraces for you to enjoy, the Port Royal hotel offers its guests a dining room with patio, two lounges, an elevator, air conditioning on the first floor and telephones in the rooms.

Woodstock Hostel
Situated in a quiet residential area the Woodstock hostel offers rooms for four to six people.
The toilets and showers are along the corridor.
This hostel does have a 2am curfew.
On the plus side there is breakfast included, a baggage storage room, Euro travelers checks are accepted, internet access, and the bar stays open until 2am.
Rates start at 25 Euros for a double and 22 Euros for a dorm. If you are staying at the weekend expect to add an extra 3 Euros to the price.

As can be seen there are some great budget price accommodations in Paris. Remember though, these are popular so arrive early if you wish to grab a bed.
